Zero 7 - In The Waiting Line - For The Weekend

train ride to nowhere
relentlessly moving on
de vleigende hollander

memories of those rides
watching the lights whizzing by
clattering all night

the sad whistle like
a piercing cry of an owl
still haunts my dreams

Goodbye To Three Word Wednesday

3WW - memorise goodbye haphazard

we make haphazard connections with bloggers
visiting the same sites year in year out
we don't need to memorise the code
we never think it is going to end
and then like all things
it  finally does and we must say
GOODBYE

Thank you Thom

War And Peace

this epic novel
has been gracing my bookshelves
gathering dust for decades
when it is not used for propping up
a broken window in my study

there comes a time in a life
when one has to face up
to certain realities

it is unlikely that
i will ever dance
with gorgeous uniformed russians
named vronsky or alexei

it is unlikely that
i will ever attend a wedding
where the bridal waltz is shostakovitch

no one is ever going
to play the  balalaika  and sing  to me
in russian
or fix the window

'War and Peace'
will probably sit on my shelves
unopened
for at least another decade
and the window ?
maybe in another life

MLMM  - Wordle 161

thank the hereafter
dame edna
of slovenly posture
shaking a gladiola
looking as if she has suffered
from decades of entombment
immured in a  melbourne restaurant
radiating a cloudburst of a  smile
has finally retired

Neil Young - Old Man

Dear
Success Stories From My Student Days

where are you now?
self assured long hair'd intellectual habitues
of inner city pubs and shared terraces
discussing free love existentialism
the price of hash and politics
watched shyly
by a wide eyed ingenue
straight from the convent
sitting in the corner
thinking you must be all geniuses

i see some of  you occasionally
now serious grey haired old men in suits
stalwart conservative establishment
being interviewed on tv
wondering how that happened
is that what growing up is?
i'm growing old
not growing up

Signed

3WW- pasty scent revel

for a very tall young man
sad and fragile
at the moment

revel in your youth
enjoy the scent
of its magic and promise

pasty faced and forlorn is not
for a shimmering star like you
you're a smile maker
a chip off the old block

entwine
those elegant long legs of yours
around life
make love to it and dance

They Are Only Just Things

so they say

what - just things?

my dinosaur plate
given to me by an admirer
although he did write
" thinking of you "
so i could be mistaken

what - just things?

my vintage plates
my pineapple jugs
bought from op shops
over decades

no  - they are not just things

they are beautiful inspirational objects
that escape ordinary eyes
those who equate beauty and worth with monetary value

one of the great
ordinary/extraordinary moments in life
is sipping hot tea
snuggled up
under my mum's huge
watermelon pink mohair blanket
propped up against someone else's great
aunt's soft  embroidered cushions
by the 1940s electric log fire
bought in the blue mountains
in a junk shop at the railway station

such a moment is
inspiration for much poetry
creative concepts and problem solving
my version of versailles luxury

(i've been to versailles incidentally
this is better)

Crowded House

when your tiny world
so carefully protected
is smashed
blown up
ripped apart
and things
cannot get any worse
you recall
a perfect balmy november night
at a concert
last year on sydney harbour

the audience sings along
to songs   - milestones
in  so many of our lives
a sea of joyous faces
a magical evening
one of those special events

a communal arm  wraps itself around  you
holds you close
and
you don't feel so alone

Sunday Whirligig

scintillating, leap, carries, each, flagrant, nonchalant, end, late, nights, spill, way, dawns

The Liverpool Plains NSW

late nights and dawns are spectacular up here
scintillating stars spill across the milky way
each making the heart leap
nonchalant and flagrant disregard for the beauty of nature
carries a price and can only end in tears

Australia's Great Barrier Reef

strange wonderful creatures
glide quietly and gracefully
underneath the ocean
in a silent mysterious ballet
blissfully unaware
their days are numbered

the great barrier reef is dying

we indifferent custodians
are killing it with
poison and pollution
collateral damage
from mining

all so we can have
more of everything
when in the real sense
of enrichment
all we have
and will ever have
when the reef goes
when climate change
takes its toll

is nothing
