Terania Creek

an ancient rain forest
terania creek was our secret place
many years ago

the  perennial sound of the falls
the occasional crashing branch
and bird shrieks
never marred the peace
in this special healing place

then the loggers came
the hippy locals
fought them off and won

then the tourists came
and no one can win
against that phenomenon
of inevitable destruction

it was the last time we were all  together
happy and  swimming in the creek
with dear alfredo

implausible back then
to think he would die so soon
that we would now be dead
to each other

time moves on
time to find another healing forest

Home

Criss Canning

home is a refuge
a place of peace and colour
my own little world

it's not a castle
but cosy warm and cute
with lots to look at

Criss Canning

when i shut the door
i breathe a sigh of relief
escape from the fray
peace at last

Birthday Girl

memories
of my first birthday party
at four

puzzled

where did they find
these children
all strangers
and BOYS  too

shudder

Autumn in the Park

Centennial Park

committed to honing
the perfect body
on her knees
she is getting closer
as
the poet lugs her unfitness
at a snail's pace
around the lake

in one hour
the picture
will turn
from this
to this

Centennial Park

it gets dark early now
with winter approaching
autumn always
the sad time

the swans ducks and geese
are tucked in for the night
on the island
the last of the light
reflected on the lake

Election Night

not wrong piglet
saturday night
it was the unloseable election
everyone said so
there was hope
for a fair go for the little aussie battlers
not to be
the light went out again
and darkness descended upon this land
what is wrong with people

Australia's ruling conservatives have won a “miracle” victory in the nation's election stunning pollsters and the opposition Labor party, which failed to convince voters they should back its progressive agenda to tackle inequality and climate change.

Carpe Diem # 1664

late summer
alone on the beach
with only tracks

Jane Reichhold

a tinge of sadness lights the sky
the setting sun slips away

Outback Garden

dry grass
no ride on
just a slasher
hard yakka
no need to go to a gym
here in snake haven

cactus and succulents
in a garden
which looks after itself

no roses and tulips
no sound of water fountains
or basho's frog
plopping into a pond

just olive and peppercorn trees
in the driest continent on earth
a testament to botanical resilience
determined to survive

the hardy butter bush
grows in gravel
along abandoned railway tracks
city folk call it a weed
i call it a miracle

Halcyon Days

sunshine and picnics
halcyon days of childhood
in a gentler time

 no one knows
what the future holds
life is no picnic

if you go down in the woods today
don't talk to strangers
enjoy your teddy bears picnic

listen to the bird song
and if you hear a rustle in the bushes
run for your life

Doris Day

1922 - 2019

icon of the silver screen
50s technicolour goddess
sunny and sweet
animal welfare activist
leaves us

RIP

suburban mums
modelled themselves on doris
lovely blonde hair
fur stoles
jewelled earrings
immaculate housekeepers
in pretty aprons

it was the age
of powder puffs and rouge
of romance....yes
of saturday afternoon movies
of schmaltz....yes
of hors d'oeuvres
of wonderment ...yes

which made for
lovely escapist dreams
enjoyed
by all ages

Late Afternoon Walk

the sea was wild today
the rocks  were given
a thorough pounding
by the angry sea

who left this gift
of two little angels
by the warning sign

was it to remember the fishermen
washed off the rocks

the tourists who drown here
every summer

a prayer for the protection
of everyone who comes here

was it a thank you gesture
for this beautiful place
which so many enjoy

i wonder if these angels
will be here tomorrow

Sundays Whirligig # 212

This weeks words come from Peter Rose's poem
' Memorabilia'

friend bookshop edition ditties doves boxfuls
sheet borrow stuff slash hotel purblind

he left boxfuls of books and stuff
at his purblind friend's place
a room in a  cheap hotel
near the new edition bookshop
borrowed a sheet
and slept in the back of the car

the doves and busker
woke him singing little ditties
suddenly he was overcome
with a need to slash a few paddocks
mend a few fences

more than a month
in the city was enough

Sunday Muse # 54

you were a fledgling
little black bird
when you first chose me
as your perch

but now
the weight of those
richly nourished feathers
has become a burden
so heavy
i'm afraid this hand will collapse

i do hope those wings of yours
are ready to fly away
soon

Cinquain

i'm here
by accident
it could have been the states
they got offered a place here first
just luck

no wars
sunshine beaches
they were very happy
no germans lurking in the bush
just snakes

night sky
the milky way
in outback australia
lots of space and no one around
thank you

Biodiversity

If we lose the insects then everything is going to collapse,” says Prof Dave Goulson of Sussex University, UK. “We are currently on course for ecological Armageddon.”

where have all the flowers gone
the insects are disappearing too
we are currently on course
for ecological armageddon
oh for the wings of a dove
convenient transport for lady birds
no longer available

would you like to swing on a star
carry moon beams home in a jar
and be better off than you are
or would you rather be a pig
far too many here already
with and without trotters
you can be better than you are
you could be swinging on a star
and who knows
without light pollution
you might even see one
