NOSTALGIA

 https://rallentanda.blogspot.com/2017/02/nostalgia.html

no swimming pool
just endless hours of fun
in a simpler age

learning to make cakes with mum
in the kitchen
or spending days on the beach
investigating rock pools
building sandcastles
digging holes to china
lurping on home made ice blocks

playing on swings and seesaws
making cubby houses
from cardboard boxes
teepees from old sheets
collecting caterpillars in jam jars
making dolls from clothes pegs

every garden had quick sand
down the back in those days
with stories of small children
who wandered off
and were never seen again

the ones
who spoke to strangers
offering sweets
were put into hessian bags
hurled from the top of the cliffs
into the sea

the boy who
swallowed the apple seeds
was found in the morning
by his grandma
with a tree growing out of his stomach

we enjoyed
the wonder
the thrill
the innocence of childhood

we had the best of it

  1. Yes, we did. Simpler and far happier times. I wonder if today's children manage to have that sense of innocent wonder. I hope so. I am smiling at all of the fearsome warnings from back then too. I think today's kids need more warnings than they get, now that the strangers are so many and so dangerous.

  3. Apart from the hessian bags, it could have been me.

  4. SO beautiful memories! And OMG! We've also had that dose of the fearful tale of speaking to strangers and apple seed (in my case apple was replaced by orange). Yeah...the good ol' days.

  5. What a wonderful dose of nostalgia this sunny morning, Rall! It reminded me of my nan, the paddling pool in her garden and making cakes! She saved up threepenny bits all year to take me and my sister on a coach trip to seaside. If only we could go back to those days of innocence – and the stories we were told.

  7. Oh nostalgia, you've written it so wonderfully. A time when wonder was so real, and imagination a constant companion.
