WHAT"S GOING ON...FRIDAY WRITINGS # 242..POETS and STORYTELLERS UNITED

kindness

both joy and pain
when you realise that
you only receive it from
strangers
the nearest
not always the dearest
if not for strangers
kindness would indeed be
a stranger

TANKA TUESDAY CHALLENGE NO 79

Emotional Expression

Japanese poets often use color to express feelings rather than to define them explicitly. For instance, a poet might describe a scene with vibrant colors to convey joy or a muted palette to express sadness. This subtlety allows readers to interpret the emotions behind the words, creating a deeper connection to the poetry.

sitting in her drab
cluttered kitchen she day dreams
of a bright red one
that was fifty years ago
she never ever got oneliked red dresses too
red her favourite colour
she waited for him
but he never came for her
didn't love her after all

it took quite a while
to recover but she did
some things don't work out

she now drives a van
a small hand painted red one
she likes all things red
red is a colour to
ward off evil so they say

FRIDAY WRITINGS # 241....POETS and STORY TELLERS UNITED... CHANGE

THINGS HAVE CHANGED

IT'S A DIFFERENT WORLD NOW

child's play
in a different world
no cell phones
no internet
just tea parties
for your dolls

back then
this was everyones dream kitchen
it's still mine

eccentric maiden aunts
owned a budgie canary or cocky
they enjoyed a close relationship
with their birds
developing similarities

birthday cards
christmas cards
they came by mail
a lovely tradition
no longer

before television
the wireless
a magical source
of entertainment
of information
in every household

odds and ends
nothing was wasted
clothes were costly
before cheap imports

diy..make it your self
creativity
the mother of necessity

little girls
used to wear dresses
ribbon bows in their hair
they visited the library
they knew how to read
there were no insane demands
by big tech
on the individual

people knew how to talk
to each other
were not glued
to cell phones

W3 Prompt # 225....THE SKEPTICS KADDISH

PROMPT

An old woman blows out 78 candles on her birthday cake but one refuses to go out no matter how hard she blows. It burns with a blue flame and whispers a name she has not heard in 40 years Your poem is her conversation with that candle What does she decide to do: let it keep burning or pinch it out?

instantaneous reaction
was to throw the cake
out of the window
certainly not
pinch it out
and burn her fingers
certainly not

let it keep burning
she had mastered the art
of turning someone
into a pane of glass
so that they didn't exist

after all
she was the one
who taught her
by example
how to do it

GOING GENTLY BLOG...John Gray https://disasterfilm.blogspot.com

Winifred was my favourite of John's dogs

Finlay leading the Welsh terrier charge

A HAPPY DOG

I was reading Yorkshire Pud's blog last night and was reminded of  an area in Sheffield I used to know very well. YP rented an allotment off Hagg Hill, which was the back road between the surburbs of Crooks and Walkley and Rivlin Valley which led into Hillsborough.

At rush hour these essentially country roads were often gridlocked with commuters so  the usual five minute journey across the valley could take a frustrating half hour or so.
Back in 2002, we had only one dog, a bouncy, lively Welsh Terrier called Finlay.
Finlay loved Traffic jams , for it was the only time he was " allowed" to drive the car.
Ok when I say drive the car, he used to sit on my knee with his paws on the steering wheel and his head sometimes out of an open window, a position of power where he could  watch the world move slowly by as we edged our way through the traffic home.
His happiness of this simple little treat always made my day.
On one of these treat days, We were spotted by the traffic police. I never saw the police car behind me, so the sharp knock on the window threw me slightly
I wound down the window fully and Finlay stuck his head out to say hello to a slightly amused policeman

" What are you doing?" the policeman asked as Finlay smiled broadly at him with big goo goo eyes.
" He likes to drive" I said lamely
" Has he passed his test?" The policeman asked
" well  no but , I do the pedals for him " I tried to be funny
" In the back" the policeman ordered with a smile, and before he walked back to his car he kissed a very happy Finlay very gently on the head.”

a conversation
with a charming policeman
would so make my day

come to think of it
it's unlikely to happen
down under in Oz

sweet charming  police
are not a feature down here
as they are elswhere

forecast bed sighed neck head  part laid dashing give morning  warmth always

she sighed
he was so dashing
the  irresistible warmth of his neck
his head resting against hers
luring her to bed
part of her
wanted to get laid
wanted to give her all
but that familiar little forecast bell
tinkling
will you still love me you in the morning
was  always a warning

 SEADNA....CELTIC VERSE

spring will sing her  sweet song so soon
wretched winter's  been too cold
aching bones bundled fast in furs
spring's salvation for the old

let autumn loose in the far north
they've had a sizzling summer
a new experience for them
let's hope autumn's a stunner

start to creak a little
picking up things from off the floor
seems to take a long time

picking herself up

bending over is not so easy either

to wash her feet in the shower
it is strange knowing
she is the same age as old people
yet another reality
she must come to terms with

HAIBUN

Sir Anthony Hopkins composed the romantic piece "And the Waltz Goes On" in 1964. Too humble and insecure to share his early musical talent with the public, he kept it hidden for nearly 50 years. In 2011, his wife secretly sent the score to Dutch violinist André Rieu, who fell in love with the tune and performed it live with his orchestra.

sensitive tickle pigeon light street glow evening attract view cast dance cool

twas a lovely cool breeze
with a marvellous view of the harbour
a lone pigeon cooed in delight
a soft glow from the street light
tickled his sensitive smiling face
nothing could cast a  pall on this evening
who could resist
she was so attracted to this man
she wanted to dance with him
under the sheets
