Thinking of The Little Things

she only took pleasure
in little things
she led a quiet life
never had any news
she wrote and told him
a great night for her
was eating a ripe mango
while writing to him
in the early hours
she never heard from him again

Cinquain

you wont
remember this
years ago i called you
so nervous excited happy
hopeful

how things
have changed since then
twas inevitable
nothing lasts forever it seems
that's life

There's Something About Spring

it's getting late
been sitting here
for hours
soaking up the sun
soaking up  beauty
in this
little oasis of repose
rising above
the mayhem and madness
of the traffic

the spring lamb
is thawing on the back seat
the veggies are wilting

must wend my way home
to peel the potatoes
watch the bad news

still retaining
that nestled warmth
from what some might say
a 'wasted' unproductive afternoon
spent staring into the harbour

i could have stayed all night

Wordle 173 MLMM

turned out to be a disastrous
shopping expedition
even though you were tickled pink
at squandering all that money

setting off the alarm
giving a polished dramatic art performance
of the seraphic supplicant  going round the bend
for the benefit of the store detective

showing him your pretty coloured petticoats
which you accidentally forgot to remove
after trying them on

ashened face skin tone ecru you realised
you had failed to persuade him of your innocence
leaving  him  neutral unmoved and  unconvinced

you were the  third that morning

throw three coins they say
think before you  throw the third
be careful what you wish for

coins - a tradition
to pay the ferry man as
he crosses the river styx

thirty pieces of silver
does not sound like much but then
what is the price for a life

in my day it was a coin
now days the kids issue
a statement of claim

Earth, Wind and Fire

Spring

the  jasmin is out
everything is glowing
the water has been turned into wine
the loaves and fishes are fragrant with garlic and herbs
the long overdue spring has arrived
the moon winks
the night sky smiles
hope springs eternal

Dementia

she treasures
those precious moments
in the peace and quiet of the early hours
it's her time to dream

his demons are growing stronger
the raging becoming unbearable
harder to quell
meds not working

all she can do
is breathe in the sea
fill her eyes with blue
fill her ears with the wind
pack her mind with beauty
and escape through her pen

THIS WEEK'S WORDS come from "Good Shape" by Esther Cohen: look, writing, tell, enormous, drawing, elsewhere, jackets, long, think, flat, see, you

look
do you see those girls
in long flat enormous jackets
with weird drawings on them
what do you think they're doing

they are writing notes
on each others legs

tells me everything
call me conservative
but i'd say they were
elsewhere in the head

THE DIG TREE

burke and wills
aussie explorers
exhausted and starving
poor buggers
planning on reuniting
with the group waiting
for them with supplies
arrived in the evening
of april 21st 1861
at Coopers Creek
months overdue

everyone had gone
the team had left at 10 am
that very morning
unable to wait any longer
carving out DIG on the tree
where they had buried
a few supplies

australian history had
a sliding doors moment

needless to say the DIG tree
has managed to survive
as part of our heritage

sadly burke and wills perished
their expedition doomed
they did not make it back

fate played her hand
she was not on their side that day
blows hot and cold

The House that Time Forgot

this little minnow
nestled amongst
the mc mansion sharks
is the last of its kind
on the bay
the house that time forgot

the sweet unpretentious owner
cannot be seduced
by the offer of squillions

she is staying
she likes her home
she is not selling
any time soon

met her this afternoon
she's a pleasant surprise
a breath of fresh air
a reassuring reminder of
how things were once
in a gentler era

a little house
in the shade of mcmansions
unassuming gem

kermit plays the banjo

Edvard Grieg - Anitra's Dance

he was just 21
saw her at a hotel in cairo
a vision of sultry seduction

the war disappeared
when he saw her dance
the rat of tobruk's heart
soared like a lark

they laughed at her dainty little shoes
next to his clodhopper army boots
she folded the bank notes
back into his hand
said tonight is my gift to you

no matter what happens
you will always remember me
and i you

the memory of her stayed with him
for the rest of the war
nestled in his heart
amidst the booming gunfire
and atrocity

tears rolled down his face
70 years later
narrating this tale
in an interview
for a documentary

sometimes love
presents itself
in unusual ways

the wing of an angel
touches your soul
and guides you through

you never forget

Wordle 170 - MLMM

if you compose
a rock opera
about sibling rivalry
before dawn

i will give you starlight
on raspberry jam toast
smelter the shape of a goldfish
into your brass trombone
release your friends
all clamouring innocence
incarcerated for dubious dealings
in the dungeon
and find them all jobs on the firing squad

A Day In The Life Of

Shadorma

awful day
everything goes wrong
homeward bound
stop the car
watch wind surfers skim the waves
beauty at my door

go inside
now what's for dinner
open fridge
curried snags and veggie rice
turn on news and crash

let them eat cake
starving folk were not happy
guess what happens next

queen marie antoinette actually said
'let them eat brioche'
which is similar to bread
enriched with egg and milk

nevertheless les paysans
were starving
madame la guillotine
had a field day in the ' reign of terror '
the queen was executed on 16 october 1793

the streets of paris ran with blood
the smell  was so bad around la place de la concorde
real estate prices dropped drastically in that area
no one wanted to live there

poor woman
i can relate to this
it's the sort of thing
i would do

i once apologised
to a burglar
i said
" i'm sorry
i thought you were a burglar"
bursting out laughing

he turned and ran away
obviously thought
i was stark raving mad
