Edvard Grieg - Anitra's Dance

he was just 21
saw her at a hotel in cairo
a vision of sultry seduction

the war disappeared
when he saw her dance
the rat of tobruk's heart
soared like a lark

they laughed at her dainty little shoes
next to his clodhopper army boots
she folded the bank notes
back into his hand
said tonight is my gift to you

no matter what happens
you will always remember me
and i you

the memory of her stayed with him
for the rest of the war
nestled in his heart
amidst the booming gunfire
and atrocity

tears rolled down his face
70 years later
narrating this tale
in an interview
for a documentary

sometimes love
presents itself
in unusual ways

the wing of an angel
touches your soul
and guides you through

you never forget
