SCHOOL SHOOTER CAN BUY AN ASSAULT RIFLE KILLS 19 KIDS YET CAN'T BUY BEER

you don't have to be

a wise old owl or a doctor of philosophy

or familiar with a study on mass murder

to make a prophecy that these executions

will happen time and time again

the rot is deep and wide spread

black shoppers shot at the supermarket

massacre barely stalled for a week then followed

by children with spanish names shot dead at school

call for calm thoughts and prayers

cop out....no way

do something

rise up

NOW

is ferrying its control

to  the republicans

enough is enough

this cannot continue

THIS WEEK'S WORDS come from "The Point" by C. Dale Young: doctor, barely, prophecy, deep, spread, stalled, owl, ferries, calm, study, rising, Spanish

Earthweal....LESSONS FROM THE WILD

a perfect moment

a butterfly kiss

in bright blue and sunshine

a breathtaking beauty

soon to be extinct

in twenty years

Monarch butterflies are in danger — so much so that they may soon be officially endangered. Due to deforestation, climate change and associated habitat loss, monarch populations are in sharp decline, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to decide whether to add the monarch to the endangered species list later this year.

This is not good news for the planet. Sure, monarch butterflies are nice to look at, but they are also important pollinators as well as a food source for other birds and insects. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help reverse the population’s downward spiral.

Build a butterfly garden

If you have outdoor space that gets at least some direct sun, plant a small pollinator garden with flowers that attract butterflies as well as bees, moths and other insects.

You’ll definitely want to include milkweed, which is the only plant that monarch caterpillars eat. Swamp milkweed is the best bet, but other species of milkweed will do. From there, consider including a variety of flowers and plants that will be easy for you to care for (native to your area) as well as some that will thrive across changing seasons.

The University of Illinois Extension has a handy list of plants to get you started, and the Fish and Wildlife Service has a basic guide to pollinator gardens.

And if you don’t have a yard, a planter or pot on your balcony will work just fine.

Earthweal Weekly Challenge

What is your Witness to the Magnitude?

my witness is to the magnitude of  human folly

responsible for the destruction of this planet

my witness is to the greed self centredness self indulgence

in the name of being comfortable and never being

inconvenienced for any reason whatsoever

we must have a holiday abroad

because (gasp ) we haven't had one for two years

filling the skies with thousands of fuel guzzling planes

and their resultant emissions

keep the economy moving no matter the cost

crowds at the airport do not wear masks because they are inconvenient  and everyone

has had enough of plague reality so we pretend it is over

besides

the elderly disabled and those with health problems are expendable

so too bad if they catch covid and die

a little german pyscho with a moustache thought this too

the russian one minus the mo is doing a good impersonation

we use as much electricity as we can afford to squander

so we can swan about the house in a t shirt in the winter months

throw out throw out throw out everything not new

bigger is always better

new goods are not made to last so

we keep consuming consuming consuming

we use cars whenever we feel like it

with no thought of emissions

coal fired electricity plants churn out toxins daily

and on and on it goes

but

it's not going on indefinitely

so

have a laugh now and then

especially at those wuhan bats

that managed to kill millions of people

germ warfare?

we don't dare say that

meanwhile

do your very best

so when it's time to push up the daisies

you leave with a clear environmental conscience

well maybe

Earthweal Weekly Challenge

 Earthweal

For this week’s challenge, write about the spirit(s) of place where you live and have your being in.

 i'm at home

in all the rock formations around the harbour

in  ocean pools along the sydney eastern beaches

i'm at home

with the currawongs kookaburras cockatoos and wallabies

i'm at home

in the outback listening to the butcher birds and that bastard wombat trying to tear down the

foundations of the house

along with all the other assorted lethal creatures lying in wait to topple me

I have lived in lots of places and have adapted to all of them

darwin would be proud of me

Coonabarrabran NSW

perhaps  i have a touch of the extra terrestrial about me

besides not all who wander are lost
