i def think religeon can bring those things...something to believe in when there is nothing...i also think we are sold spiritual experiences at times too...like orgasms which can certainly be faked.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, I like the short lines and the punctuation at the end.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Brian. Like many things, I think religion can be a tool or a crutch. It is what we make of it. Using it as a rationale for war is blasphemy at its worst. I have to wonder how much of the story of Teresa of Avila is myth.
ReplyDeleteI always loved that statue... well, what can I say, I'm a guy... but I think your poem speaks to the hypocritical element in parts of religion that they want to experience the worldly while condemning it and rationalizing it as spiritual ecstasy.
ReplyDeleteNice.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point Blue Flute...differentiating between spiritual ectasy and ectasy?
ReplyDeleteThe first stanza (Haiku?) is a stand-alone gem of great price.
ReplyDeleteshe still looks very much in order for just having an orgasm..smiles..enjoyed your thoughts on a difficult an deep topic here..
ReplyDeleteGreat verbalization of that 'look' in the statue's hooded eyes--so amazing that rock can be made to do that, or words, as yours do--I both agree with and enjoy everything you say here.
ReplyDeleteA very intriguing take on the "look"...I would have never equated it with religious hypocrisy but you tackled a very difficult subject with your skillful pen ~
