For The Weekend

Saturday Winter Morning

i sit here looking out
at that cloud
which has been changing shape
all morning

the rose petals drop
on to the silver tray
the jacaranda tree is perfectly still

i crumple the ' to do ' list in my hand
listening to rufus and clattering
coming from the kitchen
smells of coffee and toast
waft my way

i cannot get out of bed
i have made all of this
far too comfortable
created a monumental temptation
to thwart any  constructive activity

even if the fire alarm went off
i doubt if i could drag myself
from the warmth
of my fur rugs and soft pillows

a leading icky question
suggesting she was hiding something
(giggles)

russia is getting such bad press
at the moment
with all the lavish media hype
about drug taking in sport

it gave her

Procrastination

Centennial Park

my favourite lake
in the park
the pampas grass
looks so happy today
i cannot imagine why
the geese are honking
at the pea hens and ducks
the cockies screeching
above

am the only person here
in the early afternoon
can't begin to tell you
what a luxury that is
i want to carry this feeling
around for the rest of the day
leave the unopened mail
till tomorrow

Miss Muffet Strikes Back

little miss muffet
has the vote now
no more heavy crinolines
eating curds and whey
or being scared off by spiders

no longer the second sex
created for the purpose
of being a man's slave
a woman can be
anything she wants
thanks to our
great grannies
the suffragettes

thanks for sticking
hat pins in the foe and
making endless sacrifices
to obtain the vote for women

and also for
overcoming some nasty propaganda
to discredit the cause

still
a long long way to go
many women suffer
in the third world today
as we write

men must come to the realisation
that women make better leaders
blessed with greater insights equal intelligence
and superior organizational skills

so file in boys
compliantly and cooperatively
behind us
we are going to run the show now
welcome to brave new world

Wordle 118 MLMM

antlers methuselah dahlia evasive struggle transfuse
residual barkeep the fourth rule pluck presentiment evil

there was always a
presentiment of not evil
but evasiveness about the barkeep
looking almost as old
as  methuselah
in need of a blood transfusion

even wearing
christmas antlers
and a santa suit
residual of last night's
boozy party
did not make him look
 jolly

customers struggled
to keep a straight face
at his ridiculous get up

one  broke the fourth rule
and placed a yellow dahlia
behind his ear as a joke
the plucky young girl
immediately wished
she hadn't

he stormed off into the night
was not found until morning

those were carefree days
and a lot of fun
even so
she remembered that
earsplitting rejection
but still managed to maintain
a stiff upper lip
and dead pan face

it was the first time
she understood what they meant
when they talked among themselves
about
batting for the other side

Late Night Thoughts

i thought i had found you
but it was just a flash
of fool's gold

unreal unworkable impossible
and
ever so magnetically appealing
so much so
that it  became all consuming
every waking hour
finding you spreadeagled
across my mind

when i hear a song
like this one late at night
in the dark
in the quiet
by the glow of the fire
i sometimes wonder
what we would have been like
together

i can only think
we would have been
ecstatically happy
but these thoughts
were mine alone

so

with heavy heart
i sink into the cushions
fall asleep
awake to the sounds of the city
banging of garbage bins and trucks outside
jump starting  the grind of the day
and  never think about you again

(until the next time )

Sunday At South Head

Hi from my little cottage on Sydney Harbour.
( I wish!) LOL
Actually this was the assistant lighthouse keeper's cottage
at South Head until 1933
Poor guy having to suffer these digs.

Sunday At South Head

we become complacent
about such beauty
on our door step

having recommend this walk
to a tourist
i decided to  brave
the school holiday crowd
drag myself this afternoon
away from the comfort
of  books furs and fire
to do the walk
from camp cove to south head

captain arthur phillip
must have gasped in awe
as he entered the heads
for the first time

we still do

the roar of the waves
still hold the cries of souls
shipwrecked on the rocks
more than a century ago

we sit eating our salad sandwiches
on the same rock seat we did as kids
staring into the waves
back then
wondering what was beyond the horizon
eager to search for greener pastures
until
we realised much later
we were sitting on as green as you can get

PS

i must make the time
to do this more often
in the winter
Cheers to my readers

An Afternoon With Alfred and Franz

Alfred Brendel plays Franz Schubert's Impromptu in Gb major D899

what i have learnt
and
all i know is
happiness must never
be compromised

if it presents itself
in whatever form
grab its little tail
before it slips away

it doesn't visit often

all i know is
happiness can be found
in the quality
of the moment

at this moment
i am in love

at this moment
i feel blessed

at this moment
i feel gratitude

to be able to marvel at
the stunning beauty
of  a pale pink and winter grey sky
on a cold still winter's afternoon
by the warm glow of a fire

with alfred and franz

Election Day July 2016

sometimes
it takes an erudite inspirational
self confessed pagan
to spark religious thought
to set the thinking wheels in motion

st augustine's thoughts
come whirring in
on
conscience
truth
and
integrity

which spin off into
aquinas
newman
chesterton
and
ratzinger

thanks rosemary
it's saturday for chrissake :)
markets and coffee
hair and makeup
trinkets baubles and gossip day

am thinking
about malcolm turnbull
our prime minister
a convert to my lot
am constantly studying him
peering into him
desperate to find something
that i can relate to in our shared
fundamental essence of belief

can't see it
can't find it

but as pope francis says
" who am i to judge"

forgive  me your holiness

i am

at the ballot box today
