Nostalgia

no swimming pool
just endless hours  of fun
on a summer's afternoon
in a simpler age

learning to make cakes with mum
in the kitchen
or spending days on the beach
investigating rock pools
building sandcastles
digging holes to china
slurping on home made ice blocks

playing on swings and seesaws
making cubby houses
from cardboard boxes
teepees from old sheets
collecting caterpillars in jam jars
making dolls from clothes pegs

every garden had quick sand
down the back in those days
with stories of small children
who wandered off
and were never seen again

the ones
who spoke to strangers
offering sweets
were put into hessian bags
hurled from the top of the cliffs
into the sea

the boy who
swallowed the apple seeds
was found in the morning
by his grandma
with a tree growing out of his stomach

we enjoyed
the wonder
the thrill
the innocence of childhood

we had the best of it

  1. Oh I just love this!! Quicksand was seriously a problem back then! Don't forget about the bee that will get ya if you keep that arm out the car window. We really did have the best of it. :)
These photos are inspiring. They are similar to the illustrations in the Dick & Jane readers.
Just love everything about this post.

  5. The pictures added that extra feeling of nostalgia - all those wholes dug, all those tall tales told.

  10. What delightful memories of the "good old days." The pleasures of children nowadays are so different. Ours was more simple, earthy, nice like your poem.

  12. Yes, we did have the best of it. We had few "things", but we had imagination and hours free to play in..........

  15. This sailor (who once thought an apple tree would grow from his tummy after accidentally swallowing an apple seed) loved the nostalgia, the sentiment, the innocence of this poem.

  17. What a wonderful poem, Rall. I identify with all you describe, we must be of the same vintage...
I feel sorry for the kids nowadays who seem to live all of their life glued to a TV set, a playstation device or an iPad.
