They Are Only Just Things

so they say

what - just things?

my dinosaur plate
given to me by an admirer
although he did write
" thinking of you "
so i could be mistaken

what - just things?

my vintage plates
my pineapple jugs
bought from op shops
over decades

no  - they are not just things

they are beautiful inspirational objects
that escape ordinary eyes
those who equate beauty and worth with monetary value

one of the great
ordinary/extraordinary moments in life
is sipping hot tea
snuggled up
under my mum's huge
watermelon pink mohair blanket
propped up against someone else's great
aunt's soft  embroidered cushions
by the 1940s electric log fire
bought in the blue mountains
in a junk shop at the railway station

such a moment is
inspiration for much poetry
creative concepts and problem solving
my version of versailles luxury

(i've been to versailles incidentally
this is better)

  1. Yes! I completely agree. My small space is full of treasures of little monetary value, but which bring great comfort. I LOVE fireplaces and snuggly blankets!

  4. I believe you that this is better! I too treasure certain 'things' which have great value to me – whether for sentimental associations, their history, or their innate beauty – while little in monetary terms.

  5. I agree, although Versailles is magnificent in its opulence it is not as beautiful as the things of our own that warm the memory.

  7. I love the sentiment of the poem. 'no - they are not just things' truly expresses that. Love your pineapple jugs.
