Everyone will guess this one . This was my first attempt at a terza rima sonnet. (Revised)
Your beauty was olympian and preordained
The river god caught a lapis blue nymph
by her mermaid tail and you were spawned
With an aura of orchids and eyes like ink
everyone adored you but you spurned all
Echo was besotted with your glow, soft pink
She embraced you close in musk sweet thrall
but you pushed her aside and broke her heart
reducing her to a distant vocal chamber of calls
You leaned over the pool to drink lips apart
and behold fell in love instantly with this image of gold
The face returning your gaze was beauty beyond art
Pity for you that Nemesis saw this unfold
Wreaking revenge for wounding Echo's soul
This is a lovely tribute to Narcissus--Well written terza rima. Your retelling of the myth is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThe couplet is such a strong ending to this piece. Bravo!
Sounds very much like Narcissus - but then again it could be almost anyone...
ReplyDeleteOh bravo, Rall ... a terza rima sonnet ... oh my!
ReplyDeleteI think Narcissus too. Very well constructed and absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you so much Nicole.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful rendition of the myth. I love the phrase "musk sweet thrall". Narcissus was one of the few Greek characters I always thought got what he deserved.
ReplyDeletea beautiful rendition of narcissus and his downfall. terza rima suite you.
ReplyDeleteFrancis,it's not so bad to be turned into a bunch of jonquils. Poor old Prometheus had his liver ripped out everday by an eagle. Discrimination was alive and well even back then.Good looking offenders got nicer punishments!
