WEDDING AT CANA

The help were clumsy
that afternoon dropping
plates and wine goblets
clanging and reverberating
on the tile floors

There was much laughing
and jollity and they were
getting through the
wine at a rate of knots
much like beer consumption
at a bush barbecue

The two newly weds sat
shyly and smiling at
the top table but J
detected another mood
at the table in the far corner
where the widow sat
It seemed the stone mason
had his eye on her
and it looked mutual

A feeling of great joy enveloped him
at the happiness of this gathering
He smiled at humanity at its very best
Small wonder that he loved them.
He wanted to prolong this moment.

He asked for more water and discreetly
performed his first miracle
It was equivalent to Chateau Latour
1886 vintage and he was congratulated
for leaving the best till last.

  1. I like this very much. Not to be irreverent, have you seen Rowan Atkinson's reading the lesson (or somesuch)?

  2. Thank you Isabel. I enjoyed writing both of them. Yes I have seen that Rowan Atkinson one...a hoot. Give this prompt a shot if you like.

  3. I love this version. And who's to say it's not accurate??? "Chateau Latour, 1886 vintage" is the perfect choice for the wedding. Where was J when our daughter got married?

  4. Exactly, Marianne.I think Jesus is too often portrayed as some stitched, repressed personality which psychologically does not match his historical and personality profile. He wanted to change the status quo on ideas which makes him a revolutionary.

Just think, a few centuries ago you would have been burnt at the stake by the inquisition for
making a joke like that.No worries,I would have been too:)

At $500 a bottle the wedding sounds pretty good. Although it would have been in pottery jugs in those days.

  5. I doubt earthenware would handle the pressure. Hence, the need for a good miracle: a gift for the moment and not to be stashed in the cellar as an investment.

I like your feeling of great joy. It's very near the reading I'd give it.

Jesus didn't just weep. If the apostles can be believed, he also punned.
