hard to believe
this was the situation
more than
two thousand years ago

how do you tell the kids
what a normal family is?
not us anyway

grandpa was
the most beautiful man
i have ever known
my grandmother
thought so too

conditional love
there has to be some pay off
in having children

mum's pregnant again
dad threatens to drown himself
in the harbour

no one from my lot
has ever raised teenagers
straight to boarding school

true, so don't complain
if you don't like what you see
they learn it somewhere

what makes a good parent
someone you admire and respect
the child makes the call
the child decides
if they like the way
they were raised

I wonder if there are any children who like the way they were raised, LOL. I actually should use that reward system for my own computer use, I might get more housework done, hee hee. I enjoyed this but especially love the stanza about your grandfather.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I appreciate the way I was raised. Sadly it was not until later in life when I could draw comparisons that I realised how lucky I was, and never expressed my gratitude to my family who have all now passed.
DeleteLove it! You have captured several interesting aspects of parenthood.
ReplyDeleteLots of love,
Sanaa
Sad but true! Shunning old age is like shunning wisdom, which is knowledge plus experience and gratitude.
ReplyDeleteYes, children will decide--or when they are grown their spouses and co-parents will. I think I would have loved boarding school, but who knows? Seems the grass is always greener elsewhere. Fine collage of words and illustrations.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great miscellany to pass on to my adult children.
ReplyDeleteMy computer would not show all the beautiful quotes you've used except the Socrates one...I enjoyed it most and also the grandpa one...I wish I could see all of them...
ReplyDeleteThere are some gems in this post Rall - Gobble up dainties - and normal being a setting on the drier - i love how you have added your words in between - not being normal is an achievement in a way..
ReplyDeleteYou always have nuggets of wisdom in your poems. It is not easy being a parent and more difficult if the example set was so poor. I guess my children will decide how I did.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed all of this, particularly the bit about your grandpa.
