The Sleeping Greek

The Sleeping Greek
William Dobell

kidnapped by turks on a beach
a young boy enslaved to sponge dive
escapes and joins the navy

who knows what he dreams
when he drifts off to sleep
lungs stronger than walls
a heart  that could melt icarus
the spume and sea in his veins

  2. Powerful poem - one that transcends time (sadly) - i hope he dreams good things.. most importantly i hope the desire to just be in peace is one day a given for all

  4. Your words make me wonder what he dreams? To catch a glimpse of light, perhaps, beyond the veil of night.

  5. Such vivid metaphor. Now I want to sail in his dreams. To see if I can catch anything pleasant at the edges of his mind.

  6. Wonderful that he escaped. His dreams must be of freedom.

    1. Thank you lynn. I enjoy your poetry too but I cannot comment because your format is strange and requires a password from me. I think I may have mentioned this before.

  11. A beautiful painting to match this beautiful poem. What does a sailor dream beyond the sea of life? Lovely writing Rail.
