The Sleeping Greek
William Dobell
kidnapped by turks on a beach
a young boy enslaved to sponge dive
escapes and joins the navy
who knows what he dreams
when he drifts off to sleep
lungs stronger than walls
a heart that could melt icarus
the spume and sea in his veins
Carpe Diem # 974 Cyprus
Gorgeous, Rall.
ReplyDeleteYay! A Great Australian artist features here alongside your great poem.
ReplyDeletePowerful poem - one that transcends time (sadly) - i hope he dreams good things.. most importantly i hope the desire to just be in peace is one day a given for all
ReplyDelete"who knows what he dreams
ReplyDeletewhen he drifts off to sleep" we remain forever curious here...
Your words make me wonder what he dreams? To catch a glimpse of light, perhaps, beyond the veil of night.
ReplyDeleteSuch vivid metaphor. Now I want to sail in his dreams. To see if I can catch anything pleasant at the edges of his mind.
ReplyDeleteWonderful that he escaped. His dreams must be of freedom.
ReplyDeleteSuch an incredibly powerful poem..!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an image and you ponder so well that I am taken along for the rise with this sailor!
ReplyDeleteYou tell an intriguing story here.
ReplyDelete(I enjoyed your stunning haiku e-book as well!)
Thank you lynn. I enjoy your poetry too but I cannot comment because your format is strange and requires a password from me. I think I may have mentioned this before.
DeleteYou and your verse . . . . really amazing! :)
