you have been standing
on your sturdy little stumps
for well over a hundred years
how many voices over time
are locked in these walls
i wonder
how did you
survive the cruel heat
cooking on a fuel stove
bathing in a tin tub
praying for rain
most of the time
i lie here
with a million midges
poised outside the mosquito net
intent on eating me alive
listening to the strange creaks
and soft rustles and cries of the night life outside
the wind blows across the plains
in all its wild beauty
the skies open
the angels empty their cutlery drawer
on to the roof
i smile
you must have too

A Happy New Year to you Sumana !
ReplyDeleteNice. Made me think of how we all endure "discomforts" in life, yet there is always something beautiful to make us smile.
ReplyDeleteHave a Happy New Year Rail.
Happy New Year Myrna!
DeleteOne of my faves of yours, kiddo. I often think of the hardships my grandma lived with. I especially love "the wind blows across the Plains in all its wild beauty." WOW.
ReplyDeleteI've had all the mod cons put in but still retained the original house.Very old houses fascinate me as I imagine all the families that must have lived here before.A Mr Ffrench bought this land and built the house in the late 1800/ early 1900s.I like to think he was a bushranger and has hidden tins of gold somewhere under the house which I am yet to discover :)
DeleteThis is absolutely exquisite writing, Rall. You make me want to delve deeper and ponder over your verse! Happy New Year ❤️
ReplyDeleteThankyou Sanaa. Happy New Year !
DeleteEveryone smiled :)
ReplyDeleteGood ! Happy New Year.
DeleteI so love this one, Rall! (Having sojourned in various parts of this country.) Beautifully written. I was there with you, and echoing your questions.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Rosemary. We need rain. The heat is driving a plague of midges (towards me):)
DeleteWhat fun. Thank you
ReplyDeleteWell,no,it's not all fun. Australia is famous for its killing creatures which go beserk in extreme heat.. are immune to any chemical spray ...and will chomp through mosquito nets to attack juicy poets flesh. They are the ice addicts of the global insect world:)
Delete"the angels empty their cutlery drawer
ReplyDeleteon to the roof"--what vivid imagery, Rall :-)
And here we are complaining like spoilt brats if the air conditioning goes on the blink...
ReplyDeleteWe are in the middle of a heat wave 3 weeks now....if the air con goes on the blink,I'm getting in the air con wagon and heading back to Sidernee.I hope you are not putting the Greek evil eye on me..:)
