the rancid smell of smoke
catches in the throat
three am this morning
power still out

uh oh must be getting closer
at least the gales are cool
now fanning the flames
wonder how long it will take
something tells me
to hot foot it out of here
come dawn
car packed ready to go
wish me luck
let's hope
you're not waving me
Goodbye !
Uh oh....this doesn't sound good, Rall! Hope it dies down and you stay
ReplyDeletesafe :-)
I hope you are safe and we will see you soon :)
ReplyDeleteYour words capture the fear and angst of having the fires so near. Be safe!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Australia! There are no real safe places are there? As a raging bush fire is very good at jumping! As I am writing this my nose is remembering that scent of danger in the air and planning the escape route.
ReplyDeleteGreat poem with an intriguing ending.
ReplyDeleteOh...our life can't be without hazards, if there's nothing Nature will turn against us. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking of you, this last 48 hours in particular.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness! Please be safe!!
ReplyDeleteThank y'all for your good wishes.
ReplyDeleteI did leave early and drove in ferocious heat ( ac in car broke down) so with bags of ice a wet towel wrapped around me and spray bottles drove with a lot of stops to try to cool down , stopped at a motel around 4pm...crashed...and just had 12 hours uninterrupted sleep 4am...Will take about another 5 hours to reach Sydney.
Ah, the joys of country life !
Goodness! Stay safe and God speed.
DeleteI can't even imagine what that must be like. Hot footing sums up your escape perfectly. Stay safe
ReplyDeleteThat looks terrifying! A certain sailor is relieved that you're safe.
