A Birthday Present

a lonely little child
used to play this
on an old 78
over and over again

on the first hearing
tightly furled buds
burst into bloom
inside of her

her spirit soared
up into the clouds
another world  opened
and she never returned
from that day forth

( Thanks Mummy)

  1. I am sure this waltz is printed on so many of our minds being the one piece that made us realise how beautiful classical music could be.

  2. Thank her, indeed! Some have the foresight to open all sorts of doors for the little ones!

  4. Music can help soothe many a broken soul - a fine gift to be passed on

  5. Oh this is such a sweet way to show gratitude to a wise woman. I love how you describe the "awakening" of the spirit by the opening buds.

  6. Lovely. My mother introduced me to Chicago radio station WLS and The Sons of the Pioneers, and I introduced my children to The Beatles ... two generations lacking culture (sigh). Your poem is such a sweet tribute to your Mum.

  9. This was a very touching poem, Rall. You were given flowers in music and you give back flowers in a poem...
    Lovely!
