La Bicyclette Bleue

*****

a birthday party
a birthday present
a blue bicycle
for a beautiful girl

a beautiful family
a beautiful life
in a beautiful place
just before the outbreak of war

war changed everything
war changed everyone
death mayhem  destruction
tore  it all apart
shattered everything

three generations later
the consequences
are still felt and remembered

yet
we never
ever
ever
learn

  1. So shockingly and disgracefully true. (but the time is coming)

  2. The blue bicycle is a compelling image for normalcy, forever and endlessly perverted. Sigh. Powerful allusion.

  4. No, we don't learn. But there will, I hope, always be blue bicycles.

  5. ... and yet children still ride bicycles and dream their dreams. Somehow, this old world survives the idiocy of men who would make war.

  7. I am sure the ordinary man and woman in the street learn but there are others that see us merely as cannon fodder.

  8. A fantastic poem! Beautiful photos, which send the mind back in reverie....then comes the war....and the true fact that we never ever learn. Sigh. Loved it.

  11. An ugly, thoughtless intrusion to an innocent pastime.

  12. After reading Sherry's poem I almost said the same thing. It's funny how I read yours next after Sherry's. What I said to her I'll say here; for being an intelligent race capable of doing so much good we are a disgusting people who would rather kill than think something through, or hurt someone else so we don't hurt ourselves, or take the food to eat while the next person starves. I don't know what's wrong with us?
