Neil Young - Old Man

Dear
Success Stories From My Student Days

where are you now?
self assured long hair'd intellectual habitues
of inner city pubs and shared terraces
discussing free love existentialism
the price of hash and politics
watched shyly
by a wide eyed ingenue
straight from the convent
sitting in the corner
thinking you must be all geniuses

i see some of  you occasionally
now serious grey haired old men in suits
stalwart conservative establishment
being interviewed on tv
wondering how that happened
is that what growing up is?
i'm growing old
not growing up

Signed

a late bloomer
chook lover caught back flip
in arrested development
woudn't swap places for quids
Miss Brainless Big Heart

If a man is not a socialist by the age of 20 he has no heart. If  he is not a conservative by the age of 40, he has no brains - Winston Churchill

  1. This has special meaning to an old man who married a woman who is ageless.

  4. "free love existentialism" This sounds like the title of a book--preferably a novel--I would love to read.

  6. Oh the transformation of those so-cool people into suited conservatives is painful. Likely more so for them than for we who admired them from afar who went on to lead more interesting lives than we ever could have dreamed.

  9. Hash and politics? Maybe if some of our U.S. politicians would mix hash and politics, we'd be a little less crazy. One can hope!
