Sydney My Home

i remember
waking to bright blue skies
almost every morning

i remember open windows
breathing fresh sea air
a glistening harbour

i don't remember
people wearing masks
checking the air quality
every day

my home
is now unrecognisable
yours might be too
(one day)

  1. Indeed!!! This morning, Melbourne, which I am visiting at present, woke up not only to the now-familiar smoke haze but also a very strong smoke smell. (Not a novelty to me, sad to say, having experienced it on and off in Northern Rivers before making this trip.)

  2. Well as we are powerless to do anything to change it at the moment I suppose we just have to hunker down and wear it . They say rain will not come until April. This is a Spring and Summer to remember. There are going to be so many health consequencesa from this off the charts pollution. At least we still have homes. Enjoy your holiday and try not to breathe when you go out:)

  3. Yes, this will definitely be us one day. I live on a fault line and the Big One is overdue. But the situation in Australia is breaking my heart. It is apocalyptic. May you stay safe. Those months ahead look long. I am following this closely. My thoughts are never far from it. Tomorrow Brendan's new site Earthweal invites poems from around the world on the topic of wildfires......I bet he'd love to hear from someone on the front lines.

  4. The is so terrifying. I've been trying to follow updates on the news, and it seems things keep on getting worse. Today, a reporter spoke of people sleeping near water in order to jump in if things got too dangerous. I really hope they are wrong about the rain, and that it reaches you way before spring.

  7. My thoughts are with you and your fellow countrymen (and women). I would be terrified at the realisation of:
    my home
    is now unrecognisable
    yours might be too
    (one day)
