Earthweal

 in a porsche

parked by the lake

she sat glued to her

mobile phone

engine running

air con on

like so many of them do

she does not see

the black swan or the cockies

having a punch up

over a bread crust found on the grass

or anything much at all really

unless it's on television

Michael Leunig

corellas (cockies )

black swans

beautiful  elegant creatures

inspire composers  to write cello pieces for them

gliding effortlessly across the lake

best to remember

nature is full of surprises

 never to be underestimated

This poem is my response to earthweal weekly challenge: THE SWAN.

  1. We are one distracted, lost tribe, eyes glued to our ghosts.

  2. This is so true. Tofino is supposed to be an "idle-free zone" but still people idle their cars.........sigh.........

  3. Yes, I agree. The beauty of nature is inpiring. We do well to turn our focus from the screens and immerse ourselves in the natural world. Hope is birthed there.

  4. It's even more depressing than Leunig depicts it - people aren't even looking at the outside world on their screen. Their minds are too full to be mindful.

  5. What a waste of nature: sitting in the car with the engine running!

  6. What fabulous birds you have there.
