A well known journalist who writes a regular column in the Australian Women's Weekly has published a letter she received from her Mum when she was living in London.many years ago. She is a Canadian but has been living in Oz since the 60s
She writes
I still have the letter my mum wrote to me from Canada after I told her I'd met the man who would become MOTH (the man of the house) We met in London and I wasn't going home I was going to Sydney
" Dear Patty
Thank you for your newsy letter. I have heard of people coming from Australia but not of anyone going there. I hope it is safe. Be careful and always speak slowly and clearly. Wear the maple leaf pin I gave you when you go outside dear. Otherwise people will think you're American.I love you and miss you
Mum
PS
What does his father do?"
a good hearty laugh
gives respite
from a mad mad world
times have changed
folks no longer think
aussies are a dangerous bunch
of monosyllabic cretins
( well i hope not anyway)
LOL
OPEN LINK WEEKEND # 128

Glad you found and shared the humour in this- a devastating letter but years later perhaps worth a chuckle and a wave of the hand!
ReplyDeleteAussies traditionally are very irreverent and incorrigible by nature.due to the original convict settlement..To us this is not a devastating letter...it is hilarious and would be responded top with something more vulgar than the wave of the hand:) I am going to submit an original drawing of the female convicts which explains the Aussie character
ReplyDeleteLOL. This really made me smile. Typical mother letter. My grandma wrote those kind of letters, I wish I had some of them now. I especially loved the advice to wear the maple leaf pin so as to not be considered American. I imagine that goes double these days.
