a ma belle grandmere
you have never left me
i think of you every day
i still wear your bracelet
i still pray with your rosary beads
i still use your garlic crusher
and your red saucepan
i know you loved pansies and geraniums
i know you loved Charles Boyer
and Maurice Chevalier
you transformed your humble little abode into a palace
a haven of security and warmth
i know you would have loved to live in a house like this
i wish i could have given it to you.
and of course what would a birthday be
without you singing along with Tino Rossi on a 78 disc
the avocados (your favourite) are plentiful and much cheaper now
the chicken is too but no flavour
the wine is no longer corked
people eat food from tins
and takeaway
the world is different now
you wouldn't like it
je t'aime ma belle memere
tu me manques
thank you for years of enrichment
colour kindness and love

I love the way you bring her to life in all these details. And can relate, having a very-much-loved grandmother myself (though mine came from India). I share your grandmere's love of pansies, geraniums and Tino Rossi.
ReplyDeleteKeeping memories alive. This is soul stirring Rall.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog.
Much💛love
This is so moving, Rall, and especially resonates with me. As you know, my grandma is special to me as yours is to you. I often think how horrified mine would be at the state of the world. She would not BELIEVE the prices!!!! I loved this poem.
ReplyDeleteI never really got to know either one of my grandmothers. I so enjoyed visiting time spent with yours.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, and relatable. It left me thinking of my own grandmother, for I often wonder what she would think of the world we live in. I suspect disappointment (like most of us). I love that you remember her through flowers, through food, through music, through words... and that you share your remembrance with us.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures and memories!
ReplyDeleteI don't really have anything from either of my grandmothers except memories. None of their possessions.
They would not have liked the world as it is now either.
Lovely, lively homage to your grandmere's birthday with this bouquet of memories.
ReplyDeleteShe must have been a lovely woman.
ReplyDeleteThese are such beautiful memories of her.
Lovely homage!
ReplyDelete❤️❤️❤️ and one more ❤️
