For Sumana's prompt at WHAT'S GOING ON....OVERCOMNG
WE SHALL OVERCOME
brings back memories
we sang this protest song in the 70s
on our many marches
these now old ladies achieved many changes
for the liberation of women
finally stopping the death lottery
and the vietnam war
yet sadly there is still so much to overcome
in a dangerous world gone insane
where it seems the dark forces are winning
historically evil never lasts
the light will shine through
the dark comes before the dawn
but it seems the dark is endless
if each of us could splinter a small crack in it
we could create an overwhelming light
BECAUSE
AND WE WILL

We have to keep the hope that light will overcome dark once again! And believe that YES WE CAN.
ReplyDeleteI remember back then, when we thought we would change the world. And we almost did till all the assassinations happened. It is unreal to me now that we are fighting the same battles and this darkness has spread across the globe. I LOVE the energy in your closing lines - to keep shining light because Yes We Can. Awesome.
ReplyDelete"historically evil never lasts" An absolute truth. I also love the expression "overwhelming light".
ReplyDeleteYour poem made me happy! Those women singing accompanied us on many a journey. The cracks we make will indeed break through to a huge opening someday--I have to believe it.
ReplyDeleteWe’ve done it before, now we just have to show the younger generation how to do it again. I love these lines:
ReplyDelete‘the dark comes before the dawn
but it seems the dark is endless
if each of us could splinter a small crack in it
we could create an overwhelming light’.
This is the story of all humanity, isn't it? Since the beginning, we each make a choice.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful rally cry - I hope the good always overturn the bad - Jae
ReplyDeleteWonderful words.
