APRIL

An Erasure Poem based on THE WASTE LAND by T S Eliot.

1. The Burial

april
is the cruellest month
breeding desire
stirring dull roots
with spring rain

he took me
and down we went
there you feel free
south

south
where the sun beats
no relief
dry stone
no sound of water

i will show you the garden
looking into the heart
of light
the silence sighs

that corpse you planted
in your garden
has begun to sprout

2 Game of Chess

stay with me
speak to me
what shall we do tomorrow
what shall we ever do?

you ought to be ashamed
you are a proper fool
hurry up !

3 The Fire Sermon

the wind crosses
the brown land unheard
at the violet hour

she is tired
expect nothing

4 Death by Water

the cry of the gulls
the deep sea swell
entering the whirlpool
gentile or jew
once handsome
and as tall as you

5 What the Thunder said

after the frosty silence
after the agony
a spring sings
drip drop
drip drop

when i count
there are only you and i
together

when i look ahead
who is that
on the other side of you

in the faint moonlight
a flash of lightning brings rain

limp leaves
black clouds
shaking my heart
the seals
broken by the solicitor
in our empty rooms

Sunday Scribblings 2

i am late
words that struck terror
into girls in the past

Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows. I  will here shroud
till the dregs of the storm be past.....Shakespeare

Who is this cool dude who has befriended me? Read my work for years. Sensed that I was suffering by reading between the lines.Reinforced my worth , me, having just been steamrollered by an accomplished clever hussar; so gifted, his words like beautiful butterflies would reel in your head all day long while you took a euphoric walk through the clouds.

in the dark time
someone sent a light
a really bright one

For A Unicorn With Love

they came in chains
as slaves
they have citizenship now
it does not protect them
they live in fear

did you check the car?

check the car
a hundred times
before you go
to the store for groceries
any broken parking light
could mean a summary execution

if you see a cop car
pray
pray
the angel of death
may pass by your door
this time

practise
'hands up'
in a nano second

wear
padded protective clothing
in areas
where jack boots are
likely to land
to soften the blows

lower your eyes
if questioned
say
'sorry sir'
to everything

you live
my black unicorn darling
with constant anxiety
in fear
fear for your children

thank you
for telling me
what it's like
we
all need to know

a black president
made no difference
the fact
you have defended your country
in the armed forces
means nothing
it will not protect you

your chains
were never
really removed

the home of the free?
(chortles )
most certainly
if you're white

Haiku Horizons

finally i thought
i had found the one  - sadly
another mistake

another mistake
to add to the growing list
of disappointments

For The Weekend

still swimming
in glorious
autumn sunshine
to handel harp tinkles

in a pool
with small lizards
dragon flies
covered in
pink peppercorns
and leaves
in the heat
of the  midday sun

i think of you
your writing scrawled
over this decades old tape
das klangermusik

i think of you
the shrieks of laughter
lifting the beast
on to a mattress
in the back of a station wagon
tootling off to a concert
to play this

i think of sir o e
your professor
his elegant crossed legs
a small pipe dangling
seductively from the side
of his mouth
and you
you wicked minx
torturing that poor man
with your insanely overpowering beauty

they were wonderful days

her shadow
tinkling on the harp
her beauty
inspiring
she gave it all up to be
a dutiful wife
