POETRY ON WEDNESDAY POW PROMPT 15

POW PROMPT 15
Tne 30 word wordle is displayed on Man Ray's famous photo. You vill use all of zee vurds and you vill not vinje and vine (Barbra Seville)
This is the first of the SPOTLIGHT SERIES

The SPOTLIGHT POEM requires you to answer questions about the meaning of your poem
and its origin. If the subject is one you do not wish to discuss best not submit it for a spotlight poem. Please be mindful that this is not a critique exercise.

I understand that most of us do not wish to explain or analyse our work. I am opposed to this concept in theory as individual interpretation can be just as valid as the poem's intention. And, of course the more imaginative you are the more off course and wild your interpretations can be. However just occasionally to satisfy the curiosity of certain poets (Viv) I thought it would be fun to know the intention of the poet and how wildly off course our interpretations may be.

Before asking the questions you might like to state what you think the poem might mean to see how connected or disconnected you are to the original poem. For those of you who like to write or read cryptic poetry (Francis)this should be fun!

  1. Where to start......... lovely words, except for the odd archaism like morn and maiden, which my poetry tutor forbade!

I doubt there will be any discernible meaning to my poem. And now I'm off to wrap a wet towel around my head.

  2. Is someone going to scrawl sweet words on your back in texta? Obviously these 'archaisms' are derived from a period when they were in common parlance.Even a poetry tutor with a degree by correspondence might recognise this.

  3. What does it mean?

A frisson of fear sends my heart on a wobble,
the promise of twaddle provokes me to squabble.
Forbidden words such as maiden and morn
make me wish that I had never been born.
Fingers tap on the desk in rude irritation.
Distaste for this task will fan my frustration.

I go into the hall, in search of inspiration,
and girdle my loins in grim determination,
see the silk rose in the white and peach tulle,
why am I doing this? I feel such a fool.
I watch through the window the worm-hunting sparrow –
perhaps he’ll keep me on the straight and narrow.

The tip of a compact idea starts to trickle.
Will it stay, will it go? Ideas are so fickle.
Inspiration laps at my mind with the touch of a feather.
A tiny glow buds, the question is whether
it will fan to a burn, fulfil its potential,
for that strong builder’s tea is essential.

    Throw logs on the fire, bring the cup to my lip;
settle down happily, take the first sip.
Start writing, it’s working, oh joy!
Think, think harder, there once was a boy
who loved me. Can I write about him?
But alas, for the story - my memory’s dim.

My sole consolation, I’ve used all the words.
Please may I stop now? This poem’s absurd.

  4. 'Girdle my loins'...HA! Good one!
What is that silk rose in white and peach tulle? Surely not you wearing very scratchy french knickers? Hmmm preparing for battle in french knickers. Interesting concept. This is what happens when nice middle class poets move to the continent. All downhill from here on.
    You have reminded me of
    'La Cantatrice Chauve' by Ionesco.

  5. I'm still stuck on wwp's red riding hood thing-y. I can probably work her into these words. Do you think that turban could qualify as a petit chaperon?
(I've never vinged in my fife)

  6. Que? Are you seriously saying that you don't like turbans? Simone de Beauvoir wore one for most her adult life and she scored Sartre!
(Hmm never thought of it in that way..maybe not zo good a thing!)) As for cross over prompts here ..Non et non et non ( I have always wanted to say that.)
And pleeze stop ze the vinjing (correct spelling this time.)

  7. You are quite fabulous, Rall! Who but you would post the wordle prompt words on the bare back-side of a flamboyantly turbaned naked woman!
    And only 30 words???

  8. PS - I can't wait to post your wordle photo on my blog ... it will add an air of sophistication and worldliness currently missing!

  10. Marianne it might ruin your image and scare your readers away!

  11. Dont speak Spanish Flaubert..guessing something about Rall not being normal?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Rall
    translation:
`Ok but nobody understands me normally`
I would never make the assumption that you are normal or not! ;)

  14. Don't know how I managed to miss this one, Rall! I woz wondering where next week's prompt was! Now, I'm thinking ignorance was bliss! Mostly, I don't know what my poems are supposed to mean. Great ditty, Viv!

  16. I'm going to have to try to be especially cryptic with this one to add to the fun.

  17. Not so daunting Wayne. Easy words.
I used them all in twelve lines.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Try to make us all feel better why don't you!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Balderdash Derrick! I remember you doing very compact comprehensible wordles in the past.
Mine is not cryptic...it seems that I have an ability to be cryptic...must be a personality thing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have finally managed to write a cryptic poem (well I think it is ). Some smarty pants like Derrick wil probably work it out in a few minutes!

  21. Jinksy you will need to put this on again on the Wednesday Post so that everyone in the group can read and comment on your poem.

  22. I almost gave up on this one Rall. I was at my folks' house in the mountains for the last several days, and thought nothing would come. It did, but it's not very nice. I'll post it on the Wed post. Thanks for being here!

  23. Twaddle! How could it not be nice with all those beautiful words?

    ReplyDelete
  24. aw, come on, now.
You didn't say the fool thing should *require* elucidation, only that we ought to be prepared to give it. I can be cryptic without batting a stubby eyelash.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm off now to check my eyelashes out. Seriously I have not looked at them in years!

  26. In retrospect, when writing this prompt, it never occured to me that 'imaginative and verging on wild interpretation' would result in repugnant, and gratuitously obscene and offensive commentary, as I am unaccustomed to dealing with malicious persons of low intelligence.

  27. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Four years on ...blogging has certainly introduced me to main stream malicious...Thank God I don't have to suffer these encounters in my real life !
