I wrote a love poem just recently and was reminded of how difficult this is to do well. Most poets succumb to something purplish and icky, but Lawrence is an exception and does a very nice one.

Eight Deep By Noon
by Lawrence Gladeview
it is bitter cold outside
the snow is coming down in sheets,
and naked trees are bending in the howling wind
no, i don't want to get the mail,or let the dog out for that matter...
goddamn does this hot water feel good,
running down my back, hand pressed against the shower wall
the dial will not turn left any further,i wish it would
nothing feels better than this pair of sweat pants and oversized socks
except the neat bourbon my love has poured for me to drink,
while we hold hands and watch our world ice over and cripple to its knees.
Sigh ... a lovely piece! I agree that love poems are almost impossible to do well. Whenever I have tried, they drip with cloying sentimentality. Most definitely purplish and icky!
ReplyDeleteYes Marianne,it is lovely and he has a delightful sense of humour as well.
ReplyDeleteDoes this poem solve the mystery of what you really like? Really cold weather that you haven't got there? Seriously, we're in agreement about the difficulty in writing love poems well, and the skill of this poet. Thanks for turning us on to him.
ReplyDeleteI don't like cold weather and I don't like bourbon, although for ddg Lawrence I might make an exception.
ReplyDeleteWe have a comparitively small parcel of snow country here with winter skiing but mainly the four seasons are
terribly hot; hot;less hot; and a
bit hot.
Nice. I've liked him since the first piece I read, about a scruffy apartment, as I recollect.
ReplyDeleteLateral love poetry works. That direct stuff--it's almost as difficult as writing about friendship.
Yes, I like his work too. He's a talented young poet.
ReplyDeleteRall your eclectic nature and sincerity are very humbly appreciated! thank you to all who have not only left a comment here, but have read my poems elsewhere as well. Rall from what i hear, there's big business down under in renting waterproof pants and jackets when traveling to snow country. as for the bourbon, when we rendezvous one of these passing days, i'll provide the oak aged tasting notes of kentucky's finest!

De rien( No worries mate en francais)
ReplyDeleteYou're a ripper poet Lawrence but apart from your
delightful sense of humour, it was really the manicured side burns that got to me!
Il n'y a rien de si difficile en amour que d'ecrire ce qu'on ne sent pas.
ReplyDeleteAgreed...you shouldn't attempt to write anything you don't feel!
