Mirror Mirror On The Wall

Photo: James Rainsford

her adoring daughter
her little shadow
used to gaze at her
in wonder

such beauty
reflected in the mirror
the scent of cosmetics
the sparkle of earrings
stamped on a memory
the lovely hands carefully
pinning a fresh posy to a jacket
intent and oblivious to everyone

'your mother is a beauty'
they all said

she could not wait
to grow up
to look like her
to be like her
until she did

And the mirror cracked

  1. yeah getting there is def sometimes not very fun...and being a beauty def carries its baggage....

  2. Loved the last few lines- something about reliving your parents mistakes- realising that there are some traits passed down that are inescapable. This was a great write- well crafted- with a sting in the tail at the end

  3. The loss of innocence portrayed here stikes a real chord. Growing up certainly does not come alone and there are many cracked mirrors on the road to maturity and ultimate acceptance. Brilliant write.

  4. Surprise ending with a raw truth.
