Summer Swimming Programme 2014

3WW

every afternoon
begins with
an outrageous backstroke

followed
by a jittery dog paddle
bossamba water ballet

swirling
into the strong overarm
memories of Moorea

drowning them
in  gorgeous breaststroke

power driven
still
by the ever present
thoughts

of
you
you
you
you

Haiku For New Year

three sheets to the wind
drinking to you only with
mine eyes blood shot red

should auld acquaintance
be forgot tsk start again
new friends, hope, new life

new resolutions
must complete last year's list first
forever hopeful

here's to you and me
remembering to enjoy
life here on the earth

Expectations For New Year

come new year
i am determined to be
sensible

i still have some hope
out of six billion people
maybe one likes me

maybe i'll marry
a french catholic and not
speak english again

( this is not sensible
but it is not new year yet:)

try something different
order kartoffelpuffers
schnitzel mit kase

if i keep swimming
i will drown out the sad thoughts
from my active mind

i will be relaxed
stop wanting to shoot poets
on other blog sites:)

 if i keep swimming
i will look like this by the
end of the new year

in reality
i will probably still look
very much like this

a happy new year

Midnight Mass

St Marys Cathedral Sydney

3WW - crisp exquisite magnificent

a beautiful balmy
sydney evening
and for once not hot

a feeling of anticipation abounds
excitement throbs
in the packed candle lit cathedral

masses of flowers
christmas trees and the fragrance of incense
wafts through the naves

the choir leads the procession
in crisp white surplices and red cassocks

followed by the deacons swinging thuribles
then the priests the bishops
and  the cardinal

in gold vestments and mitres
they take their positions at the altar

the choir performs the
exquisite gloria by charpentier
to an entranced congregation

one bishop is so old and frail
he dozes off and almost falls off his chair
when hymns ring out to
the glory of God

a sacristy bell rings
a hush falls over the thousands
as the host is raised

and a 2000 year old ritual
still moves people to tears
which you cannot believe
you are witnessing

as they cross themselves
joining  their hands together
in prayer

when the celebration ends
everyone sings adeste fideles
as the old hunched bishops
shuffle up the aisles

at venite adoremus
the magnificent choir
breaks out into descant

the organ
all stops out - tutti
vibrates through the city
as we sing in one voice
powering to the heavens

we all file past to shake hands
and exchange greetings  with
the bishops and the cardinal

i got severe cramp in my toe
from standing for one and a half  hours
in the wrong shoes

a bishop graciously took my hand
whilst i tried unsuccesfully to stifle my moans
of pain intermingled with nervous laughter
escorting me all the way down the cathedral steps

as the chinese tourists snapped away furiously

the gift that i want
does not come in a nice box
just personal peace

rain this hot summer
a great welcome Christmas treat
keep crossing fingers

for those who have gone
we still remember you at
this time of the year

i don't want jewels
i just want tranquillity
hope i get lucky

a great Christmas gift
would be folks remembering
to leave boots outside

Three Word Wednesday

customers jostle each other
frayed nerves at the supermarket
combative punch up in the car park
the usual behaviour representing
the seasonal pre Christmas jollies
car sluggish wont start
filthy heat and full moon tonight
HO HO HO
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Three Word Wednesday

combative represent sluggish

it is always pleasing
to take
the almost sluggish route
of luxurious connection
represented in the meeting
of like minds and the sharing
of a common philosophy

a lovely contrast to
so many combative years
on the battle front
challenging the foe

nice to
tread water softly
in a flat calm surf
bobbing  together
in the deep blue sea

suddenly
a rogue wave
appears from nowhere

dumping

the unsuspecting surfers into
a washing machine whirl spin

racing

until it crashes

thud

a white fizz froth
spreading along the shore
dissipating
disappearing
into the sand

seaweed in her hair
the only evidence
of the momentary upheaval

apart from the deep fissure
cracking the peace

Poetry Jam

always on the outer
never part of a group

she's what you call a loner
never part of a team

somtimes she finds a recruit
who invariably disappoints

so she buries herself in writing
shares interesting thoughts with the cat

and like a ghost
wanders everywhere - invisible

observing everything
she no longer wants

Haiku Heights

oh he loves me not
dew think i should care,i think
i am supposed to

dew think i could tell
he is thick and a lightweight
i'm disappointed

dew know what happens
to santas running off with
the family silver

we are not well matched
dew think this is a problem
should i forget him

dew think this haiku
is silly,it might well be
it's silly season

On The Road

poets united; sunday scribblings: Dverse (2014)

two thousand kilometres
in four days

zipping along turbo charged
streaking through the countryside

at night
the road trains
are lit like Christmas trees

magnificent testaments to santa
against a highway in pitch black

i want to keep going
i want to keep going

wouldn't it be great
just to keep going

we always say this
to each other

and we never do
and we never will

Blueys Beach

dverse

the best time
to stay here during the festive season
at my favourite place is now
pre Christmas and pre school hols

it's packed to the gunwales
during Christmas and summer
too expensive and too much flesh

am staying at blueys by the beach
a laid back sleepy little motel
by the sea

all the rooms are painted in sea blue
green and white
with christine keeler chairs
and van gogh flower prints.....nice

the very best thing
IS
a  small pool right outside my door
framed by apricot hibiscus and palms
and hardly used because aussies
prefer the surf

the cicada orchestra starts early
i step out into the sunshine
for a morning swim before breakfast
breast stroking to a currawong bazurka

in togs and thongs
unbrushed birds nest hair
propping up a panama
i cross the narrow road to buy the papers
and  notice the FOR SALE sign

my heart sinks

the decor will get a revamp
(will be considered  too 80s )
the whole mood will be lost
and why am i surprised

anything i love (and there is so little)
is always taken from me

Childhood Christmas

poetry jam : 3 ww

christmas
the highlight of the year
the tree
the crystal glasses
the best napery

silver cutlery
chocolates
nougat
bon bons
sugared almonds
the nativity scene

only good children
get presents in their stockings
so we submitted
to strict instructions
bed early lights out
no waiting up for santa

leaving out Christmas cake
and whiskey with a napkin in the fireplace
always eaten and drunk by santa
with a crumpled napkin

on awakening Christmas morning
i did wonder why the dog did not bark
but somehow knew not to ask

For The Weekend

Poets United

If you could read my mind
You would flee the scene
like a gazelle in flight
haul up the drawbridge
lock yourself in the castle
with KEEP OUT signs in red

So we will continue to skirt and circle
around each other in not quite a tango
for not quite two people in carnivale masks
so we can never quite see who the other really is
until eventually we  both disappear
into the stencilled wall paper as part of the design

Haiku Heights

rivulets of spray
saturated his long beard
merry xmas all

all of them well earned
rivulets on a parched land
wrinkles- life's imprint

it was killing him
pretending not to notice
her wet rivulets

your soul lighting the way
it has been such a beautiful afternoon

the world will mourn you

rest in peace with the angels

Mates

Poetry Jam

i love my pooh bear he's such a good friend
sometimes too grumpy but now he's on the mend

he works all day and writes all night
he's such a bonza bear and not at all trite

he thinks that i'm a serial pest
tagging along - requests requests

but deep down inside he chuckles with glee
when he opens his email and sees that it's me

if i had ten dollars i'd buy him some pants
to keep his bum warm to protect him from ants

sadly i don't have any money for gifts
he'll have to make do with a poem and a kiss

Tales From The Dark

Sijo Form

What a pity ! - life was her oyster ; before she used the wrong fork

In 1727 A Lady call Helen Morrison placed a person advertisement in the Manchester Weekly Journal . She was a lonely spinster looking for someone to share her life with. It is thought to be the very first newspaper personal advertisement. This was considered to be disturbing behaviour at the time and she was committed to a lunatic asylum for a month!

Jewish Daily Prayer For Men

For The Weekend

dverse...a conceit

the young fresh rose
soft petal'd and blush pink
has captured the desire
of the bruised
ardent horse stinger
knotting strands of gold
around her long elegant stem

after courtship
chaperoned by a gaggle
of black geese and hunters
she adorns white tulle and lace

pins herself to his lapel
till death do they part

Three Word Wednesday / Poetry Jam

twas inevitable
curiosity
got the better of him

could not resist
seeing what those
twittering gals
were up to
perched like doves
on a cramped ledge
absorbed in needlework

he was wary of women
strange creatures
they could unsettled him
with their never ending
resourcefulness and solidarity

grateful for some fresh air
sitting in the light
being out in the open
they form a tableau
of contentment and camaraderie

instead of peering out
from behind lace
straining eyes by kerosene lamps
hunched over in dark houses
soot on their thimbles

Spring Sonata

dverse oln

For Natasha

no one played this like you
with that freshness and sunshine only a
gifted seventeen year old can bring
bursting with talent
i remember

you threw it all away
for a conventional life of comfort
secretary house wife and mother
lacking confidence because
no one told how good you were

you must have known
they must have known
i certainly knew

when you played
i saw the serious
dark pall of jealousy
schadenfreud
cross their faces
i feared for you then

how on earth could we know back then
that a big talent constituted a threat
wrong time wrong country Natasha

ran into you a while back
said you had not played in decades
in fact had sold your violin
saw the pain flash in your eyes
then you quickly flicked the switch
back to garrulous chit chat

how many golden lights snuffed out
are lying at the bottom of the ocean
silenced never to be heard again
whilst the clanging cymbals play on

Sunday Scribblings/Poets United

the flight of the bumble bee
a constant buzzing in his head

a torture chamber of talent
transmitted through a cigarette
to his tapered beautiful fingers

flitting amongst the ash of promise
darting about the keyboard

Ode To The Harbour Bridge

dverse

you stand there
like a big
coat hanger
surveying all
around you
many choosing
to use you rather
than the tunnel
hidden underneath
the ferries
and the bobbing waves
for the daily commute
busy moving ants
on a wire
bustling back and forth
all day long
joining the north
to the south
chalk and cheese
staring brazenly
at the east
who see it
as part of a
personal possession
enjoyed from
the dining table
swimming pool
or the deck
of an expensive boat
used infrequently
spending
the rest of  the time
as a sad solitary
host to a
flock of seagulls
on its lonely mooring

                                        if you cannot be manipulative
kindness will be mistaken for stupidity
so  just  settle for being walked over

                                                 it does not matter

                                          there are seven billion people
                                           floating about  on this planet

                                                  if you are lucky
