The Eagles
they defined the seventies
biggest selling hits of all time
i was there back then starting out
if you weren't around
you've missed out on something special
a time that will never return
take it easy time
take it to the limit wild time
of freedom prosperity and hope
all good things must end
we all climb the mountain
see the last river to cross
the styx emblazened in neon lights
welcome to the hotel california in the sky
we have to pay the ferryman
you can't hide your lyin' eyes desperado
hope for the best
cross your fingers
and it all seems to be happening
this year in January

I wasn't familiar with The Eagles but there have been so many losses this month - either it's more noticeable as we age too or as iconic figures are replaced by Disney puppets..sadly - they all were around the same age too..not even quite three score and ten :(
ReplyDeleteI agree.. their music was a big deal back then... good memories.
ReplyDeleteA lovely tribute -
ReplyDeleteThis brought tears, Ms. Rall. Tears. Thank you. I was there and here I am again. It was a mountain, wasn't it!? Perhaps we have all seen that mountain top called youth and looked over to the promised land. Have we made one? That river we have to cross doesn't stay in the heights but wends its way to the sea. Music was my poetry then, and I listened and danced, but did not write. What made me activist then is still not accomplished.
ReplyDeleteWe have lost some shining lights from that time recently.....I love your "Hotel California in the sky"........and the look back. Yes, it was a special time. Sigh.
ReplyDelete"all good things must end" so true...
ReplyDelete2016 certainly looks like the year to say goodbye to many of the icons of our youth.
ReplyDeleteRall, I loved how you incorporated some song titles into your poem. This was a great tribute to Mr. Frey. the good ones are going away aren't they? God bless you Rall and rest in peace Mr. Frey. loved it!
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice tribute, to Glenn and to the Eagles. I too grew up with the Eagles, it was my my seventh life (time) to grow up. I had a divorce in late '68 and was 'free' for almost four years. Our new marriage has been "Life in the Fast Lane," really good.
ReplyDelete..
A fine tribute Rall. They defined music for us and every song has a place where we were...
ReplyDeleteA fitting tribute, Rall. The music that we like and listens to defines us in so many ways. When an exponent of this music leaves this life, it cannot but affect us...
