Victoria Wood - Brief Encounter parody

3 WW...nod obedience mischievous
Fear Midweek Motif Poets United

a mischievous parody
addresses a whole range of social issues
taking a swipe at the smug british class system
( orange pekoe tea for the middle classes)

a less than enthusiastic obedience
to vows
giving the nod to
bored  husbands and wives
trapped in the marital cage
desperate to escape their spouses

fear  of being alone
(monophobia)
running away with a stranger
to a leper colony
( too scary a concept)
running away with dolly
of the loose elastic bloomers
(even scarier methinks)

  1. Haha! I think comedy depends on these melodramatic--and real--fears. And love? Sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be easier if it didn't go too deep. A very refreshing parody of a parody.

  2. Sounds like the "love stories" I've been exposed too, lol. It's why solitude is so sweet.

  3. Having seen the film soon after it was released in England in the 1940's as a kid that humour was quite normal. Luckily I was part of the change in Britain post war that appreciated the emergence from the social divisions and prejudices. Working in the 1950's I worked for Watneys bewery (advertised on the wall of the pub they were in) designing new ones and altering older pubs to suit the changing times.

  7. Comedy is but an attempt to overcome our darkest fears...
