The 21st Century Woman

a woman
needs
independence
an education
she knows what the caged bird feels

a woman needs
her own income
well paid work
she knows why the caged bird sings
 for its supper

a woman needs
an abode of her own
a room with a view
she knows why the caged bird
pecks at its bars

a woman needs
a sweet cuddly creature
she can snuggle up to
on a cold winters night
if it is of the two legged variety
preferably not a sociopath or psychopath

  1. Possibly a 20th century woman. You know, one with values.

  3. Yes. Don't know why I laughed. Must be the magic of the poet. I know, I know the truth of these. Love it!

  5. Seems to start serious, but then I detect some humor and cynicism. None of us were ever meant to be in cages.

  6. Perfect! I remember being in that cage - door open, afraid to escape. But not too long after, I did. I really resonate with this poem. Loved the book of that title by Maya Angelou,as well. Time for a re-read.

  7. Well written. I like to think I'm more discriminating than the last stanza, however!

Whew, do I feel that one! Even just one night a week ...
