she saw the roses
in the waste paper bin
seemed a shame
to leave them lying there
she tried to remember
when someone had given her flowers
'twas too long ago
she would have liked to have taken them home
but they could be jinxed
the last thing she needed was
to bring even more unhappiness
into the house
she loved red roses
no- one gave her flowers
others throw them out
Jinxed roses! That is kind of cool, but makes me feel wary all the same.
ReplyDeleteAnd then we have the unspoken reason why there's already unhappiness in the house...yes, there's more depth to this than first meets the eye.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe in jinxes. I would have taken the roses to rescue them. A sad poem, that no one gave her roses. Maybe she needs to take them and start giving them to herself.
ReplyDeleteI would also be wary of red roses - I might feel differently about tulips. The lines that touched my heart and brought a tear to my eye were:
ReplyDelete'the last thing she needed was
to bring even more unhappiness
into the house'.
Sometimes you have to buy your own roses.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how long she looked at the roses in the trash. And if she likes roses so much, why she doesn't just get some...
ReplyDeleteAn evocative write around a sad image. Nice job!
