autumn
no more ocean swimming for me
i will sit on the sand with the gulls
and wait impatiently for the spring
the young surfers brave it all year round
but this sack of brittle bones is forced
to be more prudent now

one cannot ocean swim in north east tropical oz
infested with microscopic jelly fish
(with beautiful portugese names that
i can never remember )
they will kill you stone dead in seconds
miles of magnificent white sandy beaches
remain empty

mission beach north Queensland
everyone swims in the hotel pools
for a good reason
each season has its beauty but
i would happily forego the contrast of
woolly socks log fires fur rugs and mugs of hot cocoa
for an endless summer
the overwhelmingly immature in me
would like it all year round

i would trade places with anyone living
in the tropics just for the next 5 months
You might change your mind when the monsoon arrives in June and unleashes its fury for 3 months! :)
ReplyDeleteIn our part of the world it arrives in October....(note I said 5 months)I have lived in monsoonal regions ....memories of mould, torrential rain, leaking roofs and damp bed sheets...no thanks :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good and necessary trade to me!
ReplyDeleteSigh. The deprivation now could make summer even more beautiful--but the impulse to trade off is universal.
ReplyDeleteI love the way we are all different. I enjoy wearing woolly socks and sweaters, and sitting by a fire while autumn leaves fall, but when the temperature starts to climb, i hug the shade. I can't cope with heat. I can always put on a jumper or wear a scarf if I'm too cold, but if I'm too hot I can only strip down so far! However, I love the thought of sitting on the sand with the gulls! :)
ReplyDeleteYour scenery is so similar to ours on the west coast. Great beauty. I do enjoy the seasons. Summers now get too hot for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you there!
ReplyDeleteLike Kim, I can't stand the heat either - give me a sunny day with a welcoming breeze and I'm happy. But I guess it's what we are used to, weather-wise. Don't like the cold either (I'm always moaning (not really)).
ReplyDeleteHope your summer comes soon.

I am a winter girl! But your poem put me in mind of that wonderful movie, Endless Summer. I used to surf. But like you, my "battle bones" need a rest. Wow. Killer microscopic jellyfish! No thanks on those. I like your live of heat and the tropics. Sitting sipping something cool with a hibiscus in your hair.

Certainly a better option for the whole year!

For the every day sun even when it rains. I can understand your yearning.
ReplyDeleteNice poem. Like where the prompt took you
