to be fair
her mother did try to warn
her fiery intractable daughter
she did try to explain
the benefits of fluttering eyelashes
stroking a man's ego
being demure
performing the centuries old dance
that women had to perfect
in order to survive
they can't possibly all be that stupid
the young hot head fired back
the returned exasperated gaze of experience
suggested otherwise
the girl ignored the advice
along with all the other well meaning advice
kept on crashing into walls
doing things her way
incredible adventures
hit and miss
some said she was brave
in reality she was just naive
a lot of her 'friends' said stupid
motivated by envy but never to her face
yes - her life
a trial and error escapade
dire warnings were given
of an unenviable future
without the societal position she was supposed to attain
for her security and happiness
and thus
as she sits pondering the past -
years later
gazing at a huge bunch of white chrysanthemums
mixed with purple orchids
soft lit by the fire on this cold winter's night
willing herself to slide out from underneath her large fur rug
to go make a hot chocolate
she gives thanks
to the Divine presence who never abandoned her
she gives thanks
that she took the path less travelled
that she has the luxury of time to create to think to write
that she survives
that her enemies are pissed off because she does
that she sleeps soundly without pills
that she enjoys good health
that she lives by the sea
that she lives on the plains
that one person cares deeply about her and prays for her

Taking the path less traveled is often the best we could have done with our lives. I love the positive outlook of your verse.

Bravo! The first part of this story is mine, too. I love the flowers, the gifts which help us ponder, and then the gratitude, oh, yes, the gratitude. You articulate this so well--both the success and the self-pride which should be there. It is rightly earned.
ReplyDeleteIt might be titled "A Tale of a Life Well Lived"!
ReplyDeleteAs a child I met a lot of women (mainly aunts) who somehow managed alone without husbands who were at war including some who became widows. So I was surrounded by these strong women coping which was quite inspirational. I am so glad you were a strong woman too.
ReplyDeleteYes! I could have written this (except for the one person that cares for her - I have many, but no one in the same house) Thank Goddess for the path less travelled, and for time to just BE. Bravo! Awesome write!
ReplyDeleteshe gives thanks
ReplyDeleteto the Divine presence who never abandoned her
I do think there is a presence and it is good to give thanks as it make taking the road less traveled a little easier in some ways.

The path less travelled- and the courage to take it! Comes with the blessing of freedom for those who dare!
ReplyDeleteWhen you can piss off your enemies by simply being yourself, you know you are on the right path!
