the sea is wild today
not one surfer to be seen
i sip coffee
breathe in the salt sea spray
so grateful to be here
my world has blue skies in winter
my world is drought stricken on the plains
everything dying around me
everyone glued to the weather reports
dreading the inferno to come
back in the city
my world
is a bowl of bright yellow sugar bananas
my first fresh fruit in weeks
living a life of contrasts
the rugged outback and the beachside suburb
ripe juicy mandarins
turning water on from a garden hose
can reduce me to tears
tis a luxury which so many bush battlers
have not experienced in many a year
we pray for rain

Yes the world is a wild place with bright banana days too.
ReplyDeleteLuv your poem. Happy you dropped by my blog today Rall

I love how you revel in the simple pleasures life can bring..
ReplyDeleteOh, the contrast here is so well done — the abundance of water at one place while the other is reeling with drought is a testimony of our times.
ReplyDelete"ripe juicy mandarins/turning water on from a garden hose/can reduce me to tears": This is a thought well expressed.

Loved your prayer for rain.
ReplyDeleteContrasts. The beauty is their intersection in you, that you are not oblivious and numb. Therefore poetry that moves others.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written. We pray for rain too. Our entire province is burning. Cataclysms everywhere. Your description of fruit has me going out the door to the store to buy some. Smiles.
ReplyDeleteThe contrasts so well expressed.
ReplyDeleteMay your prayers be answered by the sweetness of rain.

I love that the turning on the water hose can reduce you to tears. That is in itself a most beautiful thought.
ReplyDeleteSadly in Australia we do tend to push the limits of our farming areas then pay the price when there is a drought. However there seems to be a world wide trend to unusual weather events all over. This just might be the world shaking things up a bit before settling down again or its protest that we are overdoing the deep exploration to make a few more bucks for the rich.
ReplyDeleteLove the lines of gratitude, concern, contentment and prayer. All beautifully contrasted.
ReplyDeleteI love the opening stanza and its juxtaposition of wild sea and calm speaker, sipping coffee, and then a further contrast of blue skies and drought-stricken plains, and the dread of the inferno. But oh, the bowl of bright yellow sugar bananas and the ripe juicy mandarins are so refreshing, Rall! You've really brought the joy of water alive in the final stanza.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to visit Australia. Well written poem. I particularly like, "living a life of contrasts". This was very powerful to me for some reason. Great work.
