Aged care horror:The Not So Lucky Country For Some

we had hit a wall
no proof
all the bruises cuts
were results of falls
we were told
but we knew
we knew it was a lie
we have all heard the hushed stories
we have our own stories
we were powerless
we could do nothing
so we buried our suspicions
along with our grief
at the funeral
deep in shame

SADISTS EXPOSED

the above carer Dana Gray was sentenced to home detention for a minimum of 6 months
she is allowed out to shop once a week and attend medical appointments if necessary

In the video, Corey Lyle Lucas, Mr Hausler's carer employed by the facility, appeared to violently force-feed Mr Hausler with a spoon, sneeze on him, eat Mr Hausler's food using his cutlery, flick his nose and pin Mr Hausler's arms down when he resisted.

The video also appeared to show Lucas attempting to suffocate Mr Hausler with a large napkin
The abuse his daughter recorded led to Lucas' conviction for aggravated assault.
The above served only one month in prison with the rest of his sentence served in home detention.

A Sydney aged-care worker has been filmed allegedly assaulting an 82-year-old resident, hitting the man with a shoe and shoving and dragging him while trying to remove his clothes
The 35-year-old man has been charged over the abuse at the home on Sydney's northern beaches, in a incident police have described as “disgraceful”.

don't get old down under

they killed theirs outright

  1. Oh, this is harrowing. It's unbelievable that these caretakers can be so horrible to the elderly in care. The corrupt system saves them from stringent punishment too.
Hope things change for the better and there is a concerted effort for better policy formulation to safeguard the physical, mental and emotional health of those who require care because of age or illness.
Vulnerability should never become a ground for suppression and torture.
Thanks for sharing your voice and opposition to such incidents.

  5. Oh, this is terrible Rall! I was concerned about my mother when my sister placed her in a care home. These dreadful things seem to be happening all over the world - there is no love or respect for the elderly.

  7. It's so utterly horrifying! I am eternally grateful I found a good place for my late husband to spend his final weeks. As for these others – I question what kind of training the staff receive, and how well they are vetted. Not to mention how closely they are supervised. It's widespread, not a few isolated instances. It has to be a problem at management level ultimately, and indeed part of a whole culture that urgently needs changing. Thanks for highlighting it here.

  8. What is so horrifying is that some courts deciding such treatment was not unreasonable.

  11. Thank you for going beyond your poem to the true stories and court cases. My dad is now in a home for dementia--we just couldn't care for him! Ooooooo. Horrors. And we are aging, too.
    "so we buried our suspicions
    along with our grief . . . " "shame"
May the "writing on the wall" indeed be the case for abusers of the aged.

  12. Horrifying, the terror the vulnerable lived in.....and the teeny "sentence" passed. In canada recently a care person (definite misnomer) was convicted of actually murdering eight elderly patients.
