to answer most of your questions
about life
money and friends
make strange bedfellows
to know the truth
be without it
then
be with it
then
be without it again

from time immemorial
money is power
money is revered
money is respected
those with it can never have enough
those with little always want more
the greatest contempt
in our consumer driven world
is reserved for those without it
for those who live well
on wits inventiveness and creativity
without prostrating themselves to mammon
resentment malice and envy will flow inevitably
living well on nothing is the best revenge

to date
no one has yet managed
to bribe the ferryman

True, true, especially that last bit--and we cannot take it with us. Thoughtful and witty.
ReplyDelete"the greatest contempt/in our consumer driven world/is reserved for those without it": That is so well said.
ReplyDeleteI really liked these myriad responses to the idea of money — the resulting deprivation, inequality and power imbalances have made this world what it is. And the bit about friends and money making strange bedfellows particularly made me nod and smile. Ha! :-)

ReplyDeleteThere is not much humanity when it comes to money; except when it is given away.
