at an all girls school
looking like
an orphan annie misfit
scraped knees
frayed weave on her uniform
a scrunched school hat
she rummaged in her pockets
dropping marbles and a notebook
on the chapel floor during Benediction
disturbing the black raven figures
chanting gregorian in their prieres dieu
lost in a hiraeth of medieval times
in the soft glow of candle light
they gave her the courage of her convictions
and unwittingly instilled a rebelliousness within
that she wore like the badge on her blazer pocket
throughout her life
❤️
ReplyDeleteLoved this - you get right under the skin of things here, Rall and to great effect....
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of a badge of rebelliousness!
ReplyDeleteThis made me smile at the little rebel who grew into a strong woman!
ReplyDeleteWell I hope that was you...Rebellious!
ReplyDeleteYes...:)
DeleteLove it! And love this young woman. (Can't help wondering if it's a self-portrait.)
ReplyDeleteHa, they churned me out the same way - resistant, rebellious, mind blown wide open, fleeing anything smattering of a cage............loved this poem, and identified with it to the max. LOL.
