Earthweal Weekly Challenge

What is your Witness to the Magnitude?

my witness is to the magnitude of  human folly

responsible for the destruction of this planet

my witness is to the greed self centredness self indulgence

in the name of being comfortable and never being

inconvenienced for any reason whatsoever

we must have a holiday abroad

because (gasp ) we haven't had one for two years

filling the skies with thousands of fuel guzzling planes

and their resultant emissions

keep the economy moving no matter the cost

crowds at the airport do not wear masks because they are inconvenient  and everyone

has had enough of plague reality so we pretend it is over

besides

the elderly disabled and those with health problems are expendable

so too bad if they catch covid and die

a little german pyscho with a moustache thought this too

the russian one minus the mo is doing a good impersonation

we use as much electricity as we can afford to squander

so we can swan about the house in a t shirt in the winter months

throw out throw out throw out everything not new

bigger is always better

new goods are not made to last so

we keep consuming consuming consuming

we use cars whenever we feel like it

with no thought of emissions

coal fired electricity plants churn out toxins daily

and on and on it goes

but

it's not going on indefinitely

so

have a laugh now and then

especially at those wuhan bats

that managed to kill millions of people

germ warfare?

we don't dare say that

meanwhile

do your very best

so when it's time to push up the daisies

you leave with a clear environmental conscience

  2. I agree with every word. It is more frustrating for those of us who are aware and who do watch our carbon footprint, to see the vast unconscious multitudes carrying on like there is - literally - no tomorrow.

  3. The insensitivity to the predicament of others -- the immunocompromised, animals on the edge of extinction, frightened children on another night of shelling -- is witness to the monstrosity of human wrong in the face of so much ill. And it's culturally blessed, in the name of preserving one's one sweet comfortable behind. A common pact to say nothing. If there's any awe left, it's in beholding the awfulness of the human spirit.

  4. You've summed up the egocentric human psyche--the one pushing us over the edge, no matter how hard we try to push back.

  5. This sums it up pretty well, Rall!

  6. Well, you summed that up quite well. Here we reached 1 million dead from covid. People don't seem to care much as they are self-absorbed.. It grieves my heart.
