they were everywhere
when i was growing up in sydney
the magnificent giant moreton bay figs
memories of many happy hours spent playing
creating homes and rooms
for the little magical people
which children
of our time invented and created
without smart phones or social media
just imagination and an unsullied childhood
Elena Salnikova
tragically
most of the figs have been destroyed now
sacrificed for redevelopment
we grieve
we grieve
we should hang our heads in shame
i'm keeping my eye on this one
will shackle myself with the latest unbreakable chains
to this tree if it is threatened in any way
NO WORRIES !

We grieve indeed at the loss of such beauties. I imagined fairies too in those glorious days when we used our imaginations and read books instead of plugging into a screen. Those trees really are spectacular. Great for climbing!
ReplyDeleteEvery tree protected is a precious win.
ReplyDeleteMagnificent indeed! I grew up in Tassie so didn't know them – but the little people frequented plenty of other places there.
ReplyDeleteShackled to a tree! I can see myself doing that. What magnificent trees they are. My niece from Australia just visited and remarked on how different the forests and woodlands are here. Also, yes, childhood without smart phones and social media was richer and less stressful.
ReplyDeleteI still love spending time among the trees. There's a few I would shackle myself to in order to save them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a magnificent tree. I'd join a human chain around that one too.
ReplyDeleteThis is so lovely...you speak of my own childhood. Everything was, indeed, more magical without all the technology. I miss that magic!
