Poem A Day...NaPoWriMo 2025...

An early bird prompt for those who lead the world in time ...PORTRAIT POEM

lonely times
a young traveller starting out
knew no one
visited you almost daily
in the national gallery
on my lunch break

derived some solace
from your lovely gentle face
left and went elsewhere
forgot about you
until years later when
i saw you in that hong kong bar

Portrait of Man With A Quilted Sleeve....Titian. 1510... National Gallery London

DAY 1......MUSICAL TERMINOLOGY

'Rallentanda'

with age is not as 'sharp'
as she used to be
sometimes a little 'flat'
moves mostly to an 'andante' tempo
these days
plays bach daily 'dolce expressivo'
mainly 'lento'
on occasion she tackles an 'etude' by chopin
the 'A minor' winter wind is her favourite
'con brio accelerando'
then takes a long 'pause '
for the 'rest' of the day

 DAY 2......GREEK GODS....NARCISSUS

from where i'm sitting
you are delusional narcissus
your curse still infects
endangers the world

a rose is a rose is a rose
of all the flowers methinks
the rose is the best
gertrude and will know best

DAY 3

SHADORMA

they were tired
wanted to go home
haydn fixed
the problem
wrote the farewell symphony
the prince took the hint

for an opera house  performance

you tried to before
when you attempted to enter
sydney harbour eighty years ago
but fortunately failed

so please protect us and we will

W3...Emotions as reimagined objects

this was your chair
you found it and cherished it
so i love it too
you have been gone
a long time
but nothing...nothing
not even your rhododendrons
can alleviate such unimaginable
ongoing grief
i knew it would be hard
but nothing could prepare me
for anything like this

FRIDAY WRITINGS # 169... POETS AND STORYTELLERS UNITED

oh
no john no john no john
NO
far too faded
far too jaded

she took the bait
with silver hooks
sealed her fate
with his good looks
too many wines
too many times
beguiled by words
now not heard
will walk the golden sands alone
romance the sea and write some poems

Tanka Tuesday Challenge #3 ...Mode

after  pink blossoms
cover us with their blankets
are they sad to go away

each year it's the same
they wait longing for summer
preparing for her return

IN Memory OF My Grandparents (WW2  immigrants )who used to play this music on
an old  vinyl record when I  was a small child

why is life so hard
so much pain and suffering
don't know how we get through it

writing a poem helps
plus fine  beautiful music
will forever sustain us

what must it be like
having two talented sons
both performing pianists

the parents must be
so proud and so delighted
gifting these treasures to us

FRIDAY WRITINGS # 167....Self Empathy

she gives gives gives
they take take take
they all come first
she puts herself last
and so it goes
in certain families
for generations

even with friends
they don't think twice about
a cancellation at the last minute
because a better offer came along
she's so nice
she wont mind

the penny drops
she breaks , cuts the cord and realises
she does not miss any of them
a weight that she has carried
her entire life has been lifted

now
no bitterness
no rancour
no regrets
just peace
no going back
finally experiencing the joy
of treating herself like the best friend
she never had

W-3 Challenge... Weekly Prompt

AFTERMATH

there are years that ask questions
this is one of them
what will  the consequences be
of electing president psycho
a disgrace and embarrassment
to the nation
already talking up WW3

there are years that answer
this is one of them too
an insight into  flawed humanity
so many  voted for and support
the pestilent inflamed orange scourge
about to wreak havoc and unleash
more suffering on the world

there is a familiar ring
|to his petulant outbursts
baying for blood
zelensky's blood i.e.

backing his bro buddy
the terrorist putin

ALL TOO

prescient perhaps
good friday is approaching soon
