she gives gives gives
they take take take
they all come first
she puts herself last
and so it goes
in certain families
for generations
even with friends
they don't think twice about
a cancellation at the last minute
because a better offer came along
she's so nice
she wont mind
the penny drops
she breaks , cuts the cord and realises
she does not miss any of them
a weight that she has carried
her entire life has been lifted
now
no bitterness
no rancour
no regrets
just peace
no going back
finally experiencing the joy
of treating herself like the best friend
she never had

What an empowered and wonderful conclusion - Jae
ReplyDeleteBreathing in a deep draught of freedom as I come to the conclusion of this piece! Love the meme, too.
ReplyDeleteSelf-protection = essential.
ReplyDeleteHave false friends around can be worse than real enemies. I know I've had a few of those cross my path and I'm relieved to be rid of them.
ReplyDeleteIt can be sad. I knew one of those women who tried just to be a good wife and mother, setting aside all selfish ambitions and interests of her own. Even before the youngest child left home she flipped out, left home, didn't want to be depended on or even trusted to do a job any more. I didn't think she was really happy that way, either, but she was paying her long-suppressed selfish self back.
ReplyDeleteThis can turn into total anxiety. Changes are good to make, when they improve your life, and your openion of yourself.
