Napowrimo poem Day 24
Prompt: Phrases from Shakespeare
This poem is for all those poets who dismiss Shakespeare as being irrelevant and who disdain Bardolatry.
Anne Hathaway (Will's wife) could be responsible for this:)
O mistress mine
it is thou who hast shot thine wing tipped poison
into the hearts of our fair faced poets
O wretched canker blossom
Thanks to thine evil witch hag curse
they loveth not the Bard
I have bestowed on them gifts
miraculous verse
ripples of silver and gold
in pearl shimmer'd utterance
Their eyes now blinkered
gaze downwards at grunt and sweat
under a weary life
How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is
to have a thankless child
What an ass am I in salad days to
have made the beast with two backs
and not portent the heartache and a thousand
natural shocks that followed
Such wicked revenge is steeped in malice
O vile strumpet
And all because of the second best bed
Note: From Shakespeare's will
' I gyve unto my wyfe my second best bed'
Rall, Magnificent!

ReplyDeleteAnne has much to answer for.
Happy Birthday Will (belated greetings from yesterday).

ReplyDeleteThanks everyone from me and Will. He has sent you all a message...Says, keep writing and read more Shakespeare.
Impressive! :D I like it!
ReplyDeleteYou've done a great job of assembling these phrases. I didn't realize that Anne was to blame for Will's bad rep :). I guess the curse didn't work on me... I've been a Bardolator since first reading MacBeth as a pre-teen.
ReplyDeleteI like it! My favorite images are "canker blossom" and "pearl shimmer'd utterance." The language of this poem was really beautiful to read aloud, too! :)
