it has been very dry
the wide brown land
is becoming even browner
cherry blossom
still struggles in the dry
sofala is
one of those places
you never make the time
to take the turn off
and check it out
last week i did
sat down by the creek for a while
pondered the possibility of finding gold
no not this trip girlie
sofala
the oldest surviving
gold mining town in oz
1888 pop 25000
1988 pop 72
someone still lives
in the postmaster's house
probably doesn't have ten children
like he did

artists have always
been drawn to this area
i suppose sofala does have a certain charm
still largely in tact

Daid Hill Blue Mountains Artist
no discipline problems here
primitive but effective methods
it's the aussie way
And on the other side of the earth, it's getting very brown too; but as we approach winter, and you approach summer. Someone must be having all the rain, but it certainly ain't us.
ReplyDeleteWho could be skeptical about climate change?
ReplyDeleteOn our side we call this Indian summer - the charm of old places in decline, still sad and scary is often breathtakingly beautiful.. Here is still green and lush by the way.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting town as if time stood still ~ Thanks for sharing the pictures ~

ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of some of the ghost towns in California that I saw as a child.

DeleteThis post is a welcome mini-tour of an area I would like to know more. I see a little greening there in the middle.
ReplyDeleteinteresting photographs, and the journey.
ReplyDeleteYou have done Australia's early past proud by your post on Sofala.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Your comment is appreciated as you are the only Australian who comments on my posts and will get the joke.:)
DeleteI wonder if Sofala would have changed its disciplinary style if the population had grown? Ha. I love the photos. I can see why artists are attracted to it. Glad you stopped.
