topsy turvey the seasons be
here down under mornings are cold
winter has cast a pall you see
falling leaves wet and misty
furore at executions already news old
topsy turvey the seasons be
yesterdays killings forgotten quickly
the bodies are back grim stories are told
winter has cast a pall you see
opinions vary a diverse group are we
some considered barbaric - red in bold
topsy turvey the seasons be
life goes on so we forget quickly
it's tough surviving - back to the fold
winter has cast a pall you see
we'll still take holidays there yippee
follow the sun cheap tickets are sold
topsy turvery the seasons be
winter has cast a pall you see
The repeating line is positively haunting, powerful villanelle

Recently there has been an uproar over two rehabilitated drug smuggling Australian citizens being executed in Indonesia.
ReplyDeleteIndonesia has been branded barbaric by a lot of people in the social media
On a personal note I think this is unfair as firstly Indonesia is an Islamic country and does not have or aspire to having the same ethics as a Judaeo Christian western belief system which is contrary to their religion.
As the above map shows capital punishment is practised in other countries as well which are not Islamic.
In my opinion those countries culturally operating under the Judaeo Christian western belief ethic and yet still practising capital punishment, are the ones that should be under attack ....
You've hit hard - right into the heart of the problem with this powerfully written villanelle ... Bravo!
ReplyDeleteOft there is so much negative news one wants to be topsy turvy like an ostrich and bury their heads. Though that is not the way to be. We must continue to fight for justice. We recently had in the news the death of a young man by six police officers of mixed hue. I dislike when the news points out Black or White. But folks want to point fingers and lay blame. And in this instance want justice served.
ReplyDeletePolitical Villanelle with beautiful picture - such a contrast!
ReplyDeleteHow right you are. Why aren't we calling in the American ambassador to deplore the number of executions in the US?
ReplyDeleteIndeed !
