Norfolk Island

carpe diem haiku kai

norfolk island
sad place - the cries of convicts
still etched in the pines

whipped and lashed
to a bloody pulp red tied
to a norfolk pine

  3. The horror, it has to stop. We must come together as a nation as a world and say never again.

  5. Is that really what they did? Tie the poor sods to pines and flay them?

  6. Yes, Australia was built on a lot of suffering and cruelty administered by the British. The convicts were treated inhumanely. The feeling is overpowering in certain places....a good reason for keeping our historical sites instead of demolishing them to erect concrete and glass architectural abominations. So much has been lost already.

  7. I've never been there, but I'm sure it must have a haunted feeling. I like the beauty of the first verse in particular.
