Time after Time

Midweek Motif...  PU

when i was a child
we went to a lot of weddings
the loveliness of this singer
the song and the guests remind me
of  that time

i remember dancing
on mens shoes
my tiny hands being held
as i was carefully manoeuvred
around the dance floor

i remember
the sound of silvery laughter
the clinking of glasses
the smell of face powder
perfume and freesias
the rustle of taffeta
fur stoles veils and jewels

the women of all ages
looked so beautiful to me
with their red lipstick and corsages
grown ups seemed so wonderful
i could not wait to be one

time may alter memory
maybe the past wears a rosy gloss
as you become so far removed from it
needless to say
there was so much of mine that i loved

  4. Ww! Some of these good memories hit home--standing on someone else's feet to dance, thinking it would be wonderful to be one of the beautiful, the adults ... ah! And they do get rosier with time. I find I am grateful for that more and more as I grow past my prime. BTW--On second wednesdays, Sumana writes the prompt. Such exquisitely beautiful writing.

  6. When I look back, that is how it seemed to me, too........the adults impossibly glamorous (I have never achieved one inch of glamour in my adult life, LOL) Memory shines golden. I often wonder if it has that same shine for my kids, looking back.

  8. I'm glad there's much to cherish from the past. The fact that you highlight marriage, makes me think your words are more personal than the narrator reveals. I hope the present is as happy as those thoughts.

  11. Those fond memories could be relived but what we did not see as children was the sadness and the hurt and the failures of all those people around us then. As we get older that enticing road ahead becomes steeper and more difficult to walk...unless you are very lucky.

  12. Sigh! Rose-coloured memories like gentle washes of watercolour on pale silk. We all have memories like this and the wonderful thing about the passage of time is the way it polishes the sharp edges of the things we remember - just as well, perhaps, Rall!
    Lovely piece!
